Are you working by yourself or in a team?
I will be working by myself on this project. I will make this design entirely by myself unless I need to google how something is done. I will make my design from basic shapes and then work my way up.
What materials will you need for your project?
For this project, I will need a computer, a 3d printer, and filament. I will need the computer to design the model on Tinkercad. I will then need the printer to make the model in real life.
What is your plan to create in this project?
I plan to create a utensil out of PLA that has multiple functions. I will start with something basic like a design with a spoon function and a fork function, then I will expand on it. Once I think it is ready I will then print it.
What unique qualities will your project have?
My project will have the quality of being an innovation on an existing concept. It will be similar to other multitools but rather than using mechanisms it will be able to serve all functions at once. It will be superior to existing designs in that the lack of complex mechanisms will make it easier to clean and less likely to jam.
During this day, I made the first two ends of the utensil I designed. At one end was a fork at the other end was a spoon. I had trouble making the fork sharp though.
On this day, I expanded the previous design. I added a comb and a ring to the utensil. I also made the prongs on the fork sharper.
On this day I added some of the final touches to the previous day's design. I worked on the proportions of the model so it would be more ergonomic. I also added my name to the design so people know who owns it.
Using tinkercad, I created a three-sided utensil because I wanted to make a utensil that would eliminate the need for other utensils. I started by designing the basic fork and spoon utensil in tinkercad, then I edited it to include things like a comb and a handle. Once I ensured that it would fit into the specified measurements given to me I exported it as an stl file.
During this process, I learned about 3d modeling. I learned about how you start with basic shapes and then use other shapes to change the shape of the first shape until you have intricate models. I also learned about using stl files to send the models.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Empowered Learner because I made my own design with little interference from anyone else and entirely set my own goals. This ties in with the standard because the Empowered Learner standard is about setting your own objectives and troubleshooting with the hardware and software around you to reach them.
A challenge I overcame on this project was changing the proportions of the project to be more ergonomic. I was able to do it by performing measurements on my hands and applying them to my design. Now the ring on my multi-tool perfectly fits around my little finger.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change the comb by making it longer. The reason why I would change it is because how small the comb is makes it tedious to use. This is because the comb is so small it covers very little area
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, Marketing. My project connects to the Engineering Design CTE program at Hastings High School. It connects to this program because, in the process of making this model, I had to troubleshoot some of the features of this design like the scale and shape to make it function better for its purposes. My project connects to careers in Engineering. My project connects to careers in this field because in this field you often 3d model physical designs and then use machinery, like printers, to make the design and test it.
