Has a big spot at the front and back
This is the design I came up with

This boat has channels inside its hull so then I can stack the pennies in one section then another and so on
Using aluminum and pennies as weights, I created a boat that can hold a good number of pennies because we had the challenge to create a boat that can hold a lot of pennies. This is a great challenge to test your Enginuity and design process. There was also a requirement to make it 1 inch tall 5 inches long and 3 inches wide and it was a struggle to keep it in those dimension.
During this process, I learned how to create a boat and have it hold lots of pennies without it sinking. I created multiple designs but once I found the one that worked the most I stayed with that design. It worked pretty well but once I got it to the final 2 pennies, it SUNK. I was so mad that I did not get the amount I wanted to get to.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Innovative Designer because you are using your innovating your design. Also try trial and error until you get one design that holds the most pennies.
A challenge I overcame on this project was finding the right design to create my boat. I tried so many I was able to do it by trying multiple designs seeing which one works the best. But since the aluminum foil is not that strong you need to add a lot of layers to bet the aluminum foil to hold a lot of pennies but also find the right amount to have it not sink just from the weight of the boat itself. It was defiantly a struggle to get that right amount, but I found it then I tested it and when I got more and more pennies it started to sink and then I sunk it and then it got water logged then you have to make an entire new one because the water weighs down the boat to so then you can put as many in the boat at a time
Given a chance to do this again, I would change the design of the boat to accommodate more pennies. The reason why I would change it is because I really want to get a lot more pennies than I did this time around. But what I need to do the next time is to research a lot more ideas for aluminum boat designs so then I can get the perfect design and get as much pennies as possible.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, Marketing. My project connects to the Engineering Design CTE program at Hastings High School.
My project connects to careers in boat manufacturing because you can use the designs from boat you created with the aluminum foil to recreate them in real life. You can also use these designs to create other designs for other things like hull shaping, motor preparing to see if it fits on the boat, safety, and other things too.
