HORTICULTURE AND LANDSCAPING
Contest Description:
Competitors will use plans provided to them to construct a landscape consisting of a paver patio and a garden. There will also be a small wood seating feature included.
Project Scope:
Practical Work
The test project covers the layout and construction of a small landscape (approximately 25 square feet or less) by preparing and using materials such as landscape rocks, aggregates, precast wall and paving units, composted mulch, plants, water features and wood materials.
Demonstrate skills and knowledge of interpreting landscape and woodworking drawings
Apply skilled techniques to construct a landscape using drawings, materials and tools provided
Hardscape plans
Perform all tasks safely including: personal, work area, hand tools and machinery
Softscape plans
Woodworking Project
Interpretation of drawings, written notes and specifications
Knowledge of precast wall and interlocking paving construction
Knowledge of materials and their application
Knowledge of basic construction layout techniques
Knowledge of tools, equipment PPE and safety
Knowledge of planting material and planting standards
Knowledge of the 3-4-5 theory

Measuring and layout instruments: measuring tapes
Metric and Imperial scale (for dimensions)
Pencils, and grease pencil or crayon
String line (100 ft) and chalk line nails for anchoring string line
Screed bars/screeds of various lengths
Rubber mallet, and/or dead blow hammer; duct tape
Steel mallet (2 lb or 4 lb)
Stone working chisels (splitting and facing)
Trowel; hand tamper; mason’s hammer
Spirit levels (torpedo, 2’ and 4’and 6’)

Refillable water bottle: water stations will be on/ near the contest site.
Additional snacks (recommended peanut-free)
Competitors must be dressed in a clean and appropriate manner with no logos other than that of their school/school board.
