HOME AND TEAM BUILDING

Contest Description: 

Teams of four students will compete in a one-day residential construction challenge, building a Children’s Playhouse. The contest focuses on floor, wall, and roof framing, exterior finishing, teamwork, and safe, efficient use of tools. Students are judged on accuracy, craftsmanship, organization, and completion within the time limit. 


Project Scope:

Objective: Build a Children’s Playhouse using provided drawings and materials. Skills Assessed: 

• Reading and following construction drawings 

• Floor, wall, and roof framing 

• Sheathing and exterior finishing 

• Tool safety and proper techniques 

• Teamwork and project organization 

Requirements: 

1. Assemble floor, walls, and roof accurately 

2. Install sheathing and exterior details as specified 

3. Complete the project within the one-day competition 


Tools/ Supplies Required to be brought by students:

• The competitor must supply his or her own safety equipment and hand tools of personal preference. Note all competitors must have their own CSA rated hard hats, safety glasses, and steel toe boots. Hearing protection is highly recommended. 

• An assortment of driver bits and drill bits. 

• Shingle blade or hook blade 

• Pencils • Calculator 

• Imperial Measuring tape 

• Framing hammer (smooth face) 

• Pry bar or crowbar 

• Clamps (to secure material when cutting) 

• Utility knife 

• Combination square 

• Speed square 

• Sliding T bevel 

• Tool apron 

• Framing square with imperial rafter tables 

• Stair Gauges or similar gauge or jig for roof rafters. No markings can be pre-indicated on these jigs. 

• 1 set of chisels ¼”-1” 

• Block plane 

• Nail puller 

• Hand saw 

• 2’ level & 4’ level 

• Chalk line 

• Nail punch 

• Screw drivers 

• 1 set of saw horses 

• Metal snips 

• Pliers 

• Sandpaper 

• Dustpan and hand broom/broom 

• All personal protection equipment listed in the safety portion of the scope 

• Refillable water bottle 

• Additional snacks (recommended peanut-free) 

• Competitors must be dressed in a clean and appropriate manner with no logos other than that of their school/school board. 

• Hardhat 

• Any PPE required as noted in the safety section of this scope 

For the local Competition – please bring your own power (Not required for the skills Ontario Competition)
