National 5 Practical Woodworking is an excellent subject if you like making projects and like working with your hands. It is also a break from the more academic subjects allowing you to end up with something tangible to have in a useful way for the rest of your lives. It is also a great subject if you are thinking about a career that involves practical work like the careers mentioned at the bottom of this page and it will also help you with your DIY (Do it yourselves) skills!
Entry – S3 Practical Craft Skills (Tech) is desirable. In S3, you should have completed the Games Chair, Display Board and one other small project as preparation for a the Nat4/5 Practical Woodworking course.
In this course, pupils will develop:
• skills in woodworking techniques
• skills in measuring and marking out timber sections and sheet materials
• safe working practices in workshop environments
• practical creativity and problem-solving skills
• an understanding of sustainability issues in a practical woodworking context
This Course will also give learners the opportunity to develop thinking skills and skills in numeracy, employability, enterprise and citizenship.
3 Projects - Flat-frame Construction (Swivel Steps Project) & Carcase Construction (Nest of Tables Project) & a final assessed model.
A question paper will test candidate’s knowledge and understanding on tools, materials and equipment etc. taught throughout the making of the three course projects.
Project Assignment (Internally assessed with external modifiers) and External Exam.

Linear progression
National 4 can be followed by National 5. There is no further
progression at school, however this course can lead into college courses in Construction & Engineering and apprenticeships in joinery, construction etc.
Skills progression
This is mainly a practical based course, where you will learn a
broad range of skills in woodworking. You will also work in industry type environments
following strict Health and Safety regulations also learning about invaluable skills for work including all the important social skills which will prepare you for the world of work.
No Higher or level 6 course is available.
