The Course provides opportunities for learners to be inspired and creatively challenged as they explore how to visually represent and communicate their personal thoughts, ideas and feelings through their work.
The course has an integrated approach to learning. It includes experiential learning activities which are underpinned by knowledge and understanding of photography.
In this course learners will use photographic media to produce creative and technically proficient images.
Learners will develop and apply practical photography skills, techniques and processes, and use these in creative ways when developing their ideas for photography. Learners will develop their creative problem solving skills as they resolve visual, technical and/ or functional problems.
It is recommended that they are working at National 5/ Higher English.
Pupils will have to learn about the creative and technical aspect of what is considered when taking a
photograph so we learn about various aspects. The question paper will assess candidates on their knowledge
and understanding of photography from different genres and styles, it will also sample more broadly from
across the course and assess candidates on a wider range of knowledge and understanding than can be
demonstrated in individual projects. This will include properties of light and image formation, and the use of
camera controls and photographic processes for specific effect. The pupils should be confident in their
knowledge and understanding of all these areas when completing the course.
Project
Pupils will undertake a project to complete a Photography folio that explores a genre of their choice that will
be sent off to the SQA.
This project will give learners an opportunity to demonstrate the following skills, knowledge and understanding:Â
Project planning skills when researching and investigating their negotiated project
Applied technical and creative photography skills when developing their photographic ideas and producing their photographic images.
Critical thinking and evaluation skills when evaluating their photographic work and practice.
To gain the award of the Course, the learner must complete the Course assessment and the written exam.
The course assessment will consist of two components, a project and a written exam.
The project will have three sections, the purpose of this project is to assess learners’ ability to integrate and develop their creativity and technical skills within a negotiated photography project. This project is worth 100
marks (76%).
The exam will have two sections, The question paper will assess candidates on their knowledge and understanding of photography. This exam is worth 30 marks (24%).
This Course or its Units may provide progression to: other qualifications in art and design or related areas e.g. Higher Art & Design, Advanced Higher Art & Design, further study, employment and/or training.
