The N5 Graphic Communication Course provides opportunities for learners to initiate and develop their own ideas graphically. It allows them to develop skills in reading and interpreting graphics produced by others and to continue to develop graphic awareness in often complex graphic situations, expanding their visual literacy.
Computers will be used in learning and teaching and you will work with industry standard, 3-dimensional computer-aided drawing (CAD) and Desktop Publishing (DTP) packages, thus widening your appreciation of the role of Information Technology within Graphic Communication. You will be taught how to use CAD and DTP to produce graphic design and 3D CAD engineering and architectural models / environments.
This course develops knowledge and skills in sketching and drawing everyday items. You will develop an understanding.
S3 Graphic Communication course and Art desirable, but not essential.
The course develops skills in two main areas. Candidates are able to apply these skills to produce graphics that provide relevant visual impact and graphics that transmit information.
2D graphic communication
Candidates develop creativity and skills within a 2D graphic communication context. They initiate, develop and communicate ideas using graphic techniques in straightforward and familiar contexts, as well as in some less familiar or new contexts. Candidates also develop 2D graphic spatial awareness.
3D and pictorial graphic communication
Candidates develop creativity and skills within a 3D and pictorial graphic communication context. They initiate, develop and communicate ideas using graphic techniques in straightforward and familiar contexts, as well as in some less familiar or new contexts. Candidates also develop 3D graphic spatial awareness.
2 Units – 2D Graphic Communication, and 3D and Pictorial Graphic Communication; and the final Project Assignment.
To gain the award of the course, the student must pass both the internal folio assignment which will be sent to SQA for external assessment as well as the external assessed final written exam. Both the final assignment & external exam assessment will provide the basis for grading attainment in the award A-D,
Question Paper (Exam) – 64%
Course Assessment – 36%
Linear progression – National 5 Graphic Communication can lead to Higher and Advanced Higher Graphic Communication. This can lead to Higher Education courses in Architecture, Building Design, Engineering, Drafting, CAD courses, Graphic Design.
Skills progression – The logical thinking required for this subject can help pupils develop problem solving skills. They will also learn to time manage their work as this involves some project based work.
The Graphic Design aspects have some links with Art and Design topics which, by doing both, can benefit pupils.
