The Course provides opportunities for learners to be inspired and creatively challenged as they explore how to visually represent and communicate their personal thoughts, ideas and feelings through their work.
The course allows learners to broaden and deepen their skill base, to widen their horizons regarding a range of vocations and careers and to develop attributes and capabilities of the four capacities. Throughout the Course learners will develop creativity, perseverance, independence and resilience. They will also be encouraged to be imaginative, creative; think critically, and apply practical skills in response to art and design activities. It will develop learners’ understanding of artistic and cultural values, identities and ideas. The course will also help learners gain confidence in their own creative practice and enhance their enjoyment of the arts.
Pupils should have completed National 5 previously, preferably at Grade A or B.
It is also recommended that they are working at National 5/ Higher English.

Expressive folio
Pupils will produce analytical drawings and related investigative studies in response to stimuli/ theme using visual elements expressively, showing a clear understanding of the subject matter.
Develop skills in using a range of art materials, techniques and/or technology.
Will refine their ideas and work with their strongest media to complete a final outcome.
Design folio
Pupils will produce focused investigative visual and market research for a design activity.
Build up skills in using a range of design materials, techniques and/or technology creatively developing and refining a variety of creative ideas design work in 2D and/or 3D formats.
Will refine their ideas and work with their most successful techniques to complete a final outcome.
Critical
Learners will investigate the factors influencing artists and designers work and practice and will use this understanding when developing and producing their creative expressive art and design work.
Pupils will describe how artists and designers use materials, techniques and/or technology in their work.
Analyse the impact of social, cultural and other influences on artists’ and designers’ work and practice using problem solving, planning and self-evaluation skills within the creative process.
