N4 Chemistry

Chemistry is all about how substances interact with one another. Understanding chemistry gives us an insight into how the world around us works. Chemistry is involved in all parts of our life, from cooking to understanding how drugs and medicines interact in biological systems through chemical reactions.

The following units are studied:

• Chemical changes and structure

• Nature’s Chemistry

• Chemistry in Society

To gain the course award, the learner must pass:

• all the Unit assessments.

• an Outcome 1 – pupils must conduct an investigation into an area of chemistry and produce a scientific report.

• an Added Value Unit -  pupils investigate a topic issue related to chemistry and its impact on society or the environment and present their findings.

The course or its units may provide progression to:

• National 5 chemistry

• Other National 5 science subjects.

Chemistry is involved in our everyday lives and there is a vast range of jobs and careers open to those who have studied chemistry at any level. A qualification in chemistry opens doors to careers in medicine, biotechnology, agriculture, medicine and healthcare and climate change.
