Global Jaya School Book Week was held from Oct. 30 to Nov. 03, 2023. All the activities designed helped the students to access different dimensions of improving their literacy skills. Throughout the week, GJS organized various engaging events and activities, such as competitions, dress-up day, reading buddies, a book fair, storytelling, and guest speaker sessions. In the weeks leading up to Book Week, students excitedly participated in optional competitions: Extreme Reading, Storytelling, and Classroom Door Decoration. Congratulations to all the winners!
Book Week 2023 started with a bookmark-making competition for Kindergarten to Reception students and a Scavenger Hunt activity for Year 3 up to Year 12 students. It was an excellent learning activity where students needed to use their sense of adventure, imagination, and creativity to solve complex, open-ended tasks.
One of the highlights during Book Week was the costume parade on Tuesday, October 31. The costume parade was a joint event between Book Week and Wellbeing committees. That day, students, staff, and parents embraced their favourite book characters and Halloween costumes, filling the campus with energy. Congratulations to all the winners of the costume competition!
The school transformed into a bustling literary marketplace with a Book Fair held from October 31 to November 2. Our Administration Building hallway showcased many books across genres and age groups. Students explored the treasure trove, discovering new titles and expanding their reading horizons. During the Book Fair on Wednesday, November 1, as part of a collaboration between the Junior Green School and the Book Week Committee, we also had a World Vegan stall selling fruit smoothies. The stall opened during the PYP break and lunch (9:15 - 9:35 and 11:55 - 12:35). Thank you to all students, parents, and teachers who supported our Junior Green School on this event.
Another exciting event during GJS Book Week was having guest speaker sessions. On Wednesday, November 1, P.M. Toh, a storyteller from Aceh, told a traditional story from his village, and on Thursday, November 2, another guest speaker, Cassandra Greenwell, an author from Perth, Australia, shared about her published children's book, "Isle of Pagody." These Meet the Author sessions were held for Year 1 to Year 6.
Another event that was held on Thursday was Indonesia Day for Secondary students. This day was a wonderful experience to honour our Indonesian heritage as a school community. There were many activities held during the day. One of the activities was a guest speaker session with Okky Madasari, an Indonesian novelist and academic currently PhD candidate with the National University of Singapore (NUS).
The GJS Book Week was closed by the Book Week Assembly, held on Friday, November 3. The assembly started with the Book-in activity, where all students and teachers read a book silently for ten minutes. After the Book-in activity, we shared the best three videos from the storytelling competitions and then continued with the announcement of the Book Week competition winners.
