On October 4th, the DP Visual Arts classes marked the return of class excursions to support students’ work in their courses. This time, our visit to Museum Macan was to visit a solo exhibition of one of Indonesia’s most established contemporary artist: Agus Suwage.
The exhibition has been curated to show his most important works during the 30 years of his artmaking practice, including more than 80 artworks that range from 2-dimensional media and 3-dimensional media to multimedia and interactive installations.
These artworks showcase the rich variety of artistic mediums, and exploration Agus Suwage has used in his artworks, and also demonstrate to the students that an artist should have and show multiple interests and aspirations that can be seen through their works and continued development.
The exhibition not only consists of Agus Suwage’s finalized works, but also an archive of his journals, visual exploration sketches, and preliminary works which elaborate his creative processes throughout the development of his various pieces.
Here are some thoughts from our DP Visual Arts students about the exhibition:

One of the most memorable pieces from Suwage’s exhibition. The one long piece of many beautifully drawn watercolour paintings, drawn in squares. It was quite a memorable piece. There was such variety and realism to it, and despite the different colours it still felt cohesive. Many of the Suwage’s work involves this sense of cohesion even if it was made of many little pieces. It sort of reminded me of a piece I am creating made of many little parts, and it inspired me to figure out how to make my own piece cohesive: colour value and theme. All of the pieces there have muted colours, so if I apply this concept to my own work then it will tie together beautifully. A similar theme would also help connect everything. I think that this was a great exhibition to go to and I thoroughly enjoyed getting out of the classroom and getting inspiration from Suwage’s works.

The most interesting artwork that i found was, although i did not remember the name, it was a monochromatic artwork depicting a man with a transparent globe over his head. It had a very strong emphasis on anatomy of the muscle and it will be a very relevant artwork as most of my artworks will mainly focus on the human figure. The way that the shading created a certain look would be very relevant to my exhibition. Since my topic will deal with deeper themes, and a moody shading will greatly improve on my intended mood.

I mainly found the sculptures by Agus Suwage very interesting and also inspiring, especially the artworks that managed to incorporate skeletons within their sculptures. Agus Suwage’s artworks taught me many different ways to be creative and how to express my artistic ideas & artistic intention, from using audio, stop-motion, neon lightbars. etc.

I found the small series of artworks by Agus Suwage very fascinating with how they were all the “drafts” that had connected themes. I think that Agus Suwage excels in conceptualizing his artwork and delivering his intention in his own trademark techniques. Throughout the visit, I’ve built my knowledge on how to put more creative liberty into my artworks.
