Our Reception students have been developing a love of reading in several ways. We have enjoyed having parents as guest readers to read stories in Indonesian and English aloud. Our students showed enthusiasm by listening attentively and raising their hands to ask some questions about the stories.
In the first week of our new unit, our students outlined their partners and measured blocks against the outlines to demonstrate their understanding of correctly measuring height using non-standard units.
We began our week by using scrap cloth to decorate our outlines, transform them into people representing our interests, and create a background display for our Who We Are Assembly. Students' colors and designs are other examples of how to share our interests and who we are with others.
Week 3, we empowered our students to take on the role of the interviewer so they could investigate different roles around our campus. Students went on a scavenger hunt to find various school community members who help improve our school. Our young inquirers introduced themselves and asked our staff about their job titles and what they do around campus. Students practiced communication and research skills during this lesson. In the coming weeks, we will use the information collected to have students create a display for the Primary school during Random Acts of Kindness month.
We hope our Reception students can model and inspire other year levels to show gratitude to those who positively impact our school community. We also expect our students will take more ownership of their learning and reflect on the positive values and traits our community members model. As educators, we always hope that every child can make a difference in the world by being inspired by the people and actions around them. We’re excited to see how the learning in this unit unfolds to show a more profound understanding of who we are in our school groups, who others are in different groups, and how by showing appreciation, we are living up to our potential and providing for others.
