Introduction:
Established last year by students and teachers committed to environmental sustainability, The Green School Committee (GSC) is Global Jaya’s official organisation responsible for attaining our school’s vision of fostering an environmentally conscious school and community. Our team is comprised of a diverse range of students from every secondary year level driven to bring the school’s vision to life.
Things we’ve done:
After a lengthy process of contacting a plethora of international and local organisations, we’ve partnered with Adiwiyata, a government initiative offering national accreditation to schools that have fulfilled a set sustainability criteria. As this year will be the first time Global Jaya is applying for this program, the GSC has been hard at work creating and implementing new programs to help the school fulfil Adiwiyata’s criteria. Our most recent program is promoting less plastic waste by selling refillable tumblers that members of the school community can use at the canteen cafe and receive a 10% discount on all prepared drinks. (Tumblers are still available to preorder on this form!)
Our Plans for the Future
There are still many things to be done. Currently, the GSC are contacting local organisations and opening discussions of collaboration to help GJS achieve their sustainability goals. We also have the help of Ibu Yuli, our Parent Representative, who has been assisting us in communicating with organisations and informing fellow parents on the GSC’s goals. Aside from this, the members, working hand-in-hand with the teachers, are discussing innovative ways to implement environmental consciousness in the primary and secondary curriculum in addition to our wider school community.
