Year 1
Cup of Kindness
Challenge
During our second unit of inquiry ‘Who We Are’, the Year 1 students are being challenged to complete as many random acts of kindness as they can each week. The goal of this activity is to promote kindness, appreciation, friendship and caring.
What are random acts of kindness?
Random acts of kindness are actions, big or small, that are done to others. Some examples are:
Telling someone they are doing a great job
Making an appreciation or thank you card for someone in their lives
Complimenting 3 people in one day
Being kind to themselves by eating a healthy snack and lunch on the same day.
Implementing Random Acts of Kindness in the Classroom
Each day, the class leader will choose a number on the Kindness board, which will reveal the kindness act for the day. At the end of each week, the students will write a reflection about the acts of kindness they have shown, good friendship behaviours they have exhibited or how they have been caring during the week.
Discovering the Power of Kindness
Through this activity, we are hoping to help the students discover that it is really “cool to be kind” and that small acts of kindness can make a big difference in the lives of others, as well as in their own lives.
Find a friend who
Discovering Common Interests Through Friendship
After learning about different strategies for making new friends, the Year 1 students had the opportunity to put Friendship Strategy No. 4 into practice.
Practicing Communication Skills 👫
The students utilized their communication skills by asking questions and actively listening to their peers' responses. The goal of this activity was for them to find someone who shared the same favorites or interests as themselves.
👭 Fostering Year-Level Connections
This was also a great chance for the students to come together as a whole year group, further strengthening the bonds of friendship across the cohort.
The Power of Shared Interests 👫
By finding common ground with their classmates, the students were able to build connections and develop a sense of community within their year level. Discovering shared interests is a wonderful way to cultivate new friendships and deepen existing ones.
