Exploration of Colours in Reception
Reception students are diving into the exciting transdisciplinary theme of "How the World Works," where they will explore the fascinating connections between colours, light, and sound through a series of hands-on activities. This engaging unit sparks their curiosity and creativity, making learning a joyful adventure.
One of their first projects was inspired by the charming character, Elmer the Elephant. Students were busy cutting colourful paper into various shapes to create their own patchwork art. The fun didn’t stop there; they also got to enjoy a range of playful activities, such as symmetry painting, mixing colourful potions, making rainbow ghosts, and experimenting with blow painting.
After these creative sessions, they jumped into thrilling colour experiments. One of the activities was "Magic Color Revealed," where they discovered hidden colours in trays of water and embarked on a treasure hunt for objects that matched those colours. This activity helped them learn about different colours and the everyday items associated with them.
They also got to experience the captivating "walking water" experiment. In the "walking water" experiment, all that was needed were clear cups, coloured water, and paper towels. By arranging cups filled with coloured water and connecting them with paper towels, the students watched as the water "walked" from one cup to another. The water climbed up the paper towels thanks to capillary action, creating a beautiful display as it blended and flowed between the cups.
These engaging activities not only unleashed the students' creativity but also helped them grasp the essential concept of primary colours—red, blue, and yellow. Through guided experiments, they learned to mix these primary colours to produce secondary ones like green, orange, and purple. This vibrant exploration enhanced their artistic skills while deepening their understanding of colour theory, allowing them to appreciate the role of colours in their world and creative expressions.
Swimming time!
This week marked the start of swimming lessons for the Reception class, and the students were excited to embark on this journey with Bu Harna, Pak Alwan, and Pak Alex. The lesson kicked off with warm welcomes from the PE teachers, followed by an essential overview of the swimming pool rules. Grasping these rules is important for maintaining a smooth and safe learning atmosphere for everyone.
Before heading into the pool, the students engaged in a warm-up exercise to prepare their bodies for swimming. They then walked together to the small pool, where they sat at the edge to test the water and continued their warm-up exercises while in the water.
This week’s emphasis was on helping students gain confidence in the water. They practised basic skills such as blowing bubbles, kicking their legs, moving from one side of the pool to the other, and briefly dipping their heads underwater.
The lesson ended with a fun pool activity, where teachers tossed small toys into the water for the students to collect. On their way back to the classroom, the students were excited about swimming, with some talking eagerly about what they hoped to do in the next lesson.
