This is my reference photo I wanted to creat using felt. A photo of lanterns in Hong Kong Wan Chai.
My first thought of this brief was It was a fun process since I've never tried wet felting nor dried but because I had come across videos of them and had always wanted to try it and luckily we did it was super exciting for me but I was quick slow and ended up rushing but overall it was a good experience.
I picked out some bright colours that matched closely to my reference photo.
And pick a light shade of yellow for to mix in with the other colours to make it look like its glowing and lit.same for the light pink and sky blue felt.

In the base layer I've mixed black and grey and a really dark brown
The grey will be the colour of the building and will have some yellow added later.
Then in the middle i added some black and brown to mimic the night sky.

Since the background of my reference photo is black, and the building in both sides are a mixed of light beige ,light grey from lights and some reds from the lanterns I added them in except for red because I had forgotten.In each of the the laterns I added abit of the yellow to mimic the lights in them.
Once I'm satisfied with my layers I place a layer of tull on top and lather on some soapy water then rub it in in circle.Then the fun part is rolling it up like a burrito and wrapping a towel to help catch any soapy water that might come out. And start rolling!
it had a bit of a funky smell I dindt really mind it since i wanted to see how it turned out and was worried everthing would be a mess.
but the finaly outcome was quite nice actually and decicded to add the details byt sewing it in.

This is what my finished work looks after rolling it numerous time, Soo told me from the beginning that the lanterns wont be a perfect circle and I was prepared for that and that that the felt would decrease in size to 40% since I didn't have enough time to roll it a bit more, parts of the lantern wasn't stick flat I didn't mind that much since I was planning to do some stitches to add details and outlines.
I brought it home place it on the radiator to dry ( My cat managed to find it and licked the edges off and fluffed up the red lantern in the middle.) I did chain stitch for the wire thats holding up the lanterns, a french knot on each of the first lantern. and " Y " stitch to connect the lanterns. and to out line the lanterns I did a running stitch. To make the tassels I decided to just use yellow embroidery thread and made just made some first before stitching them on.The bottom lanterns in fuchsia I was experimenting on decorations thought I'd try adding flowers but I thought it looks too busy on the lantern so I might actually just do a few of it on some of the lanterns but not all.
Overall I was really pleased with the outcome and had fun with the process I really enjoy stitching and its like a calming hobby of mine so I might add more stitches on the lantern as decorations through time. I'll need to work on my time management since everyone was fast in workng and I was quite slow since I can be very indecisive.
