Earlier this week, students from Barren County and Glasgow Highschool were recognized by congressman Brett Guthrie for the reputable Congressional App Challenge. This process requires students to code an app and present it in a video.
Given this, compared to other congressional district offices, Kentucky's second district received about 400% more submissions, emphasizing on how difficult it is to accomplish this.
Barren County High School students, Emmaline Phelps, Brooke Gibson, and Cole Young took home first place for their app “Allergy Aware”. This was created to raise awareness for food allergy through simple recipes and guides. Student Brooke Gibson states, “But the truth is people have food allergies, they're real, and a lot of people die from them everyday.”
Student from Glasgow High School, Danica Stephens, placed fourth with her app “Service Society”, which assists organizations to find volunteers and connects them with students who are looking for opportunities to help their community. “I hope as a community we can all just come together and serve and be united and so I hope that can bridge the gap.” says Stephens.
At the end of the ceremony, congressman Brett Guthrie says this competition brings together the country’s brightest and will put us one step ahead of our competitors.

On April 17th of 2025, the Boys and Girls Club of Glasgow-Barren County will celebrate an exciting opportunity that has been available at its new location for almost a year now. Starting at 11:30 a.m., the day will consist of personal narratives from a few of the kids, a showcase of new equipment, recollections from the staff, and food opportunities.
The staff and kids at the Boys and Girls Club have been excited for this day for the last couple of weeks! They are eager to not only hold this event that will foster community collaboration, but to also present to the public one of their greatest possessions. With careful planning and consideration of their community members, they believe this event will be spectacular!
With that in mind, the members of this club invited newly hired Kentucky Men’s Basketball Coach, Mark Pope to attend. Pope led the Men’s Basketball to a winning season of 24-12 this past season. The Boys and Girls club offers basketball opportunities, along with a variety of other sports, for the kids to enjoy and excel at. Thus, the staff decided it would be a great idea to invite a member of the basketball community that the majority of the kids look up to. The kids, as well as the rest of the community, are ecstatic!
Mark Pope will be attending with his wife, several UK basketball players, and a few “special guests” that will be announced at the ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house. This event is highly recommended for everyone to attend and has a promising future of uniting our community as a whole!

The store also features a portrait of the owner's grandmother near the entrance.
“Now I'm currently reading The Last Twilight in Paris which is an amazing book,” highlights Stephanie. The establishment also offers a book club where they share recommendations on books monthly. “It's a great opportunity to get into reading,” mentions Stephanie. Students from the GHS Scottie channel traveled to Glasgow’s local ice cream shop, the Creamery. They tried and rated different ice cream flavors along with zingers. Our interviewer Abigail Depp tried a vanilla bean and strawberry mix. “It's honestly good, I like it a lot,” stated Depp. We also interviewed Emma Burton, an employee that has worked at the creamery for around a year. Burton explains her favorite part of the job which is getting to know the community and interacting with its members.
The creamery has gained staggering attention within the Glasgow community. It’s a family operated small business established in 2023. From hand-crafted ice cream to their exceptional exclusive zinger energy drinks, the Glasgow city Creamery alongside its sister business Yancys always provides top quality products for its consumers.
“Regarding food the Derby is a 10/10 Acai Bowl” says Brooking. As far as ice cream, “One scoop of vanilla bean and one scoop of strawberry ice cream is a great ice cream combination” says Depp. For the Zingers, “Blue raspberry strawberry coconut is my favourite” says Burton, a one year employee at the Creamery.

National Love Your Pet Day emerged in the early 2000’s, for pet owners to show extra appreciation to their pets. As National Love Your Pet Day is approaching, GHS freshman, Jose Sanchez asked GHS students about their furry friends at home. JP Pitcock, a junior, mentioned that he had 2 dogs and a parrot. He loves his dogs because they are very cuddly and love to play. Similarly, many students around Glasgow High School have dogs as pets and love spending time with them.
As National Love Your Pet Day is coming up, remember that you can always give a shelter animal a loving home! Barren River Animal Welfare Association, also known as BRAWA, is the community animal shelter in Barren County, Kentucky. If interested in a new pet, you can adopt a cat, dog, bunny, etc. to give them a loving home. Glasgow High School’s Student Y Club will be taking up donations for BRAWA this month.

Starbucks is the largest corporate coffee chain currently in the world. With around 38,027 locations nationally, Starbucks dominates the Coffee Industry. For Starbucks lovers in Glasgow Ky, Barren county will be establishing their first Starbucks alongside Larry Glass. Opening in early june of 2025 what can we expect?
Glasgow Ky, is home to numerous small coffee shops and what can this mean for our beloved local coffee? It is very likely many small coffee shops will unfortunately have to close their doors due to corporate domination from Starbucks. While many look forward to Starbucks opening their doors, many dred seeing the doors close to their beloved local coffee shops.
