December 2022
Message from the Coordinator
The Fall semester is in the books and what a semester it has been! Congratulations to all of our graduates! Here's a brief review of so much for which to be grateful:
This monthly newsletter began in August 2022 to engage alumni, current students, potential students, supporters, and coaches across the globe. Thank you to undergraduate Mikayla Ellison for her assistance.
We expanded our partnership with the Minority Coaches Association of Georgia by co-hosting free online coaching clinics. Thank you to Executive Director, Dr. Ahmand Tinker and all of the guest speakers.
We also held a free online baseball coaching clinic with the Georgia Southern coaching staff on Dec. 5, 2022. Thank you to Rodney Hennon, AJ Battisto, and Cody Wofford!
We started posting edited clips from our archives of guest speakers and restarted sharing motivational quotes on our @GSCoachEd Social Media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, & Twitter. Thank you to graduate assistant Matthew Goldstein for all of his hard work on this.
We collaborated with Jared Benko, GS Director of Athletics, to start a monthly Professional Development Series for all coaches and athletic department staff. Thank you to Dr. Jody Langdon and Jeff Ward for speaking along with me.
We were ranked tenth in the nation among ALL online kinesiology degrees- NOT just coaching programs- based on "overall quality, affordability & commitment to student success" by EduMed.org.
We continued our Students of the Semester program by recognizing outstanding undergraduate and graduate students. For a list of our All-Time Students of the Semester since the program began in 2020, click here.
We are working with Soldiers to Sidelines to help them earn national recognition by NCACE and exploring potential collaboration opportunities to assist military personnel and their families who are interested in transitioning into coaching.
To quote the should-be-in-the-College-Football-Hall-of-Famer Erk Russell, "And you ain't seen nothing yet!"
Press on,
Coach Hal Wilson, PhD

He currently teaches KINS 7530 Psychology of Sport & Exercise Performance in our fully online master's program. The course is profiled below.
KINS 7530 Psychology of Sport & Exercise Performance
This three-credit course is offered in the summer for our master's students. The catalog description states: "Examines the psychological factors that may lead to peak performances in exercise and sport. Students will be introduced to the physical, mental, and emotional variables related to the readiness states of this ideal performance condition. Research and interventions associated with the common qualities of peak performance will be discussed."
Dr. Brandonn Harris currently teaches the course and described it this way:
"KINS 7530 is an exciting class that aims to supplement the skill set of coaches by equipping them with the knowledge and application of the psychological factors that lead to elite, peak performance in sport. Regardless of what % one believes success and failure in sport can be attributed to their 'mental game', students enrolled in KINS 7530 will learn how to leverage this critical element to support the performance and well-being of the athletes they serve."
“The most beneficial aspects of this program were really self-awareness for me. I learned so many different things as far as administration, as far as dealing with parents...I would definitely recommend this program to any coach, any educator, anybody working in the sports and health field."

Professional Development Series continues for
GS Athletics Coaches and Athletic Department Staff
Session Four was led by Dr. Jody Langdon on Nov. 17, 2022. Her session was titled "Burnout...It's Not Just for Athletes."
Each month a faculty member is presenting on a wide range of topics. Next semester's scheduled guest speakers include Dr. Li Li, Dr. Steve Patterson, and Dr. Amy Jo Riggs-Deckard. We look forward to continuing to strengthen the mutually beneficial relationship between Athletics and Coaching Education.
