November 2022
"With no undergraduate application fee, there is no better time to apply! Our undergraduate coaching courses are popular because they are experiential, fun, and prepare career-ready graduates who can immediately positively impact their communities through coaching."
November wraps up many fall sports, cranks up winter sports, and amps up the holiday rush...but did you know that it is also "No Fee November" for undergraduate applications at Georgia Southern? With no undergraduate application fees, there is no better time to apply! Our undergraduate coaching courses are popular because they are experiential, fun, and prepare career-ready graduates who can immediately positively impact their communities through coaching.
At the graduate level, our fully online master's program continues to be a national leader. We were recently named #10 in the nation among ALL online kinesiology degrees- NOT just coaching programs- based on "overall quality, affordability & commitment to student success" by EduMed.org. We also recently co-hosted a free online coaching clinic with the Minority Coaches Association of Georgia featuring guest speakers from both organizations. Finally, we are excited to cohost a free Online Baseball Coaching Clinic on Mon. Dec. 5th at 7pm. More info is in the newsletter. Please let us know how we can support your coaching.
Press on,

Dr. Hal Wilson is in his ninth year at Georgia Southern and has taught many coaching courses in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. He earned his undergraduate degree from UNC Wilmington and his master's and Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee. Wilson has coached basketball, flag football, football, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball over the last 26 years at the youth, middle school, high school, and collegiate levels. He has also been invited to speak to USA Basketball and the US Soccer Foundation, as well as colleges, high schools, and middle schools across the southeast. He was a varsity head basketball coach at three different Georgia schools for eleven seasons and is very proud that six of his assistants went on to become head coaches. In addition to several coaching awards, Wilson has been recognized for teaching, community service, and inclusive excellence at the high school, college, and university levels. He was named an Affiliated Scholar by the Center for the Study of Sport and Religion and often researches the intersection of leadership, sports, and spirituality.
"My high school football coach (the late Charlie Griffin) and college basketball coach (Jerry Wainwright) were the two most influential people in my life, other than my family. They encouraged and pushed me to reach my potential and taught me life lessons that carried far beyond competition."
Our Coaching Education programs prepare coaches for opportunities at every level of play. In fact, our graduates have coached at the youth, scholastic, collegiate, and professional levels. We are always evaluating our curriculum to make sure we are preparing our students for the real world. Below is one recent example of a real-world coaching opportunity and and example of how our program prepares students for opportunities like these:
Rehab Pitching Coach - Houston Astros (Houston · TX)
"Implement organizational pitching development program, Plan daily pitching schedule for our rehab pitchers while coordinating with other members of the field staff, Collaborate with our Sports Medicine & Performance team to implement evidence-based return to play progressions, Analyze pitcher performance deficiencies using tools, reports, and technology, Communicate plans, goals, and progress with players and relevant staff members throughout the rehab process, and Assist other field staff when able and necessary with normal day to day operations at complex (throwing BP, field setup, etc)."
KINS 7135: SPORT COACHING PEDAGOGY
This three-credit course is offered in the fall semester for our master's students. The catalog description states: "Provides the student with advanced analysis of sport coaching pedagogy, including pre-competition, in-competition, and post-competition contexts. Students will be introduced to evidence-based principles of sport skills, tactics, and strategy planning, instruction, and assessment; evaluate and reflect on their own coaching performance; and apply these principles to future coaching plans."
Hal Wilson currently teaches the course and described it this way: "I really enjoy teaching this course because it extends upon what students learned in the summer courses and emphasizes practical application to their unique coaching situations. We leverage a CoachDISC profile from Athlete Assessments to dive deep into our personal coaching behaviors, examine our past influences, evaluate current literature and 3Dimensional coaching, and then plan for how to adapt and apply this information to our future coaching given what we've learned about ourselves and best principles."

“The classes are so fun and engaging that you’ll never think of it as going to class. Also, not only will this program prepare you for your on-field duties as a coach, but it will also prepare you for your off-field duties, such as molding your coaching philosophy, creating a mission and vision statement for your program, and the professors are extremely dedicated to ensuring your success in this profession. In fact, I was able to land a varsity coaching job right after graduation.”
-Taylor Dollar ('19)
Coach Dollar completed our coaching minor and now coaches at Metter High School, who recently won their fourth straight region championship and their opening round playoff game.
Our university prides itself on growing career-ready graduates, and our coaching program is dedicated to preparing students to positively impact their communities through coaching on day one upon graduation.
