ELAR

This week in ELAR we will continue reading about different inventors and what circumstances push them to create new inventions. We will read Captain Arsenio: Inventions and (Mis)Adventures in Flight. While reading this fantasy, we will analyze the author's purpose, plot elements, and author's craft.

As we finish this unit, we will take our Module 1 Assessment toward the end of the week.

In Grammar and Writing, we will work on author's purpose and compound sentences.

Please remember to set a time to read each night at home. Reading at home increases comprehension skills, as well as vocabulary.  As students are reading, have them focus on unknown words and using the clues in the text to understand the meaning.

Social Studies

This week in Social Studies we will discuss the movement of people across the United States and why groups settle in certain regions or areas.

Math

The students are beginning to learn this week on how to multiply larger numbers such as tthree-digits by two-digits numbers. In the upcoming week, they will learn how to  divide by a two digit divisor. Please practice those multiplication facts. :)

Homework

Homework will be coming in the next few weeks.  Please check here for the homework assignments in math. For now, please practice math facts at home 4-5 times each week for 10-20 minutes.

Thank you to all who have donated to our Science classroom!! It is much appreciated and it will definitely be put to get use!

Science

**This week we have a test in Science

I have opened up our 'Science Homework' tab in Canvas. The kids can now see where they will grab 5 hard vocab words from. They will then use a piece of paper to rewrite the definitions in their own words.

This week in Science, we will be continuing physical properties of matter. Students will identify elements like texture, solubility, density, state of matter, and other attributes that can be used to categorize various objects.

A phone call is not required for absences, please email Paola Cervantes (paola.cervantes@gcisd.net) to notify the front office.

Canvas Observer

Some of you were wondering how you can become a "Parent Observer" in Canvas, so we wanted to provide that information.  Please CLICK HERE to read an article on the process.  This will provide you with step by step instructions and screenshots.  NOTE:  You will need to do it when your child is available to login to their Canvas account for a code.  If you have any issues, you can click on the "Submit a Request" at the end of the article.

Curriculum Night Information

If you were unable to attend Curriculum Night Thursday evening, August 22, here is the link to the presentation.  If you have any questions, please reach out to that teacher.  Thank you all!

Dismissal and Ride Changes:

We are continuing to use the dismissal procedure called SafeID. This system is more streamlined and much safer for dismissal times. If your child's form of transportation home changes, PLEASE let the front office know as quickly as possible and before 2:30.

From Alison Williams Our Grade Level Coordinator

5th Grade Parents, we need your help!

As our 5th graders approach the end of their elementary journey, this year is particularly special. Every event surpasses those of years past in both organization and execution. The culmination of their hard work will be celebrated with several events, including the highly anticipated Continuation—a ceremony and after-school party on the last day of school that honors each student's achievements throughout their elementary career.

Alison Williams and Sommer Clayman are coordinating each of these memorable events, but we can only make them a success with your invaluable expertise and support. Your contribution, whether in hours, time, or guidance, will be instrumental in ensuring these celebrations are truly exceptional.

We would be so grateful if you could tell us which events you can assist with. Your help will make a world of difference.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY for 5th GRADE AT TIGER FEST:

5th grade is filled with many fun bonding events. We will have a December Holiday Party, Valentine's Party, Color Run, and the big finale - CONTINUATION + CONTINUATION PARTY. Continuation is a ceremony on the last day of school to celebrate with 5th-grade teachers, middle school principals, and other GCISD administrators. We want to celebrate these tiny humans you've raised so well and give them a day they remember. We will have details on all the activities in the near future but Continuation and the Continuation party are the BIG events we fundraise for.

One of our 5th grade fundraising efforts will be a pop up 'merch table' with $2-$10 items EVERY elementary kid will be begging for! We need volunteers to help set up and sell items. Please sign up for a 30 minute shift. It takes a village, and we need your help!

Here are the upcoming dates for student council this year.  Students will learn about how to run and campaign for different officer positions if they are interested at our first meeting on September 30.  They can still be in student council and not hold an officer position.
