The Distance Education team is committed to making our classrooms accessible to all learners. There are many great feature built into the software that we use that can address a variety of needs. Check out the resources below and contact your instructor if you need further assistance.

Reading Accessibility Features

Features in Canvas

The Immersive Reader is available when viewing pages in Canvas. The Immersive Reader provides a variety of tools and options to enhances one's reading experience, including text-to-speech readers, identifying parts of speech, and picture dictionary.

Features in Chrome Browser

There are several screen reader extensions for the Chrome Browser. Note: ChromeVox is built in to all Chromebooks. You can also translate text, get definitions, and format for dyslexic-friendly reading.

Make on-screen content audio-accessible with synthesized speech.


Select specific content to hear it out loud in synthesized speech.

Features in Canvas

The Immersive Reader is available when viewing pages in Canvas. The Immersive Reader provides a variety of visual adjustments, such as text size, font type, and spacing.

Features in Chrome Browser

The Chrome browser allows you to change settings to make reading the screen easier. These changes can be temporary or set as default.

Features in Chromebooks

Chrome book offers a variety of ways to improve visual accessibility, such as a screen magnifier, adjusting mouse cursor size, highlighting cursors and text, and a high contrast mode.

Features in Chrome Browser

These features allow you automatically generate subtitles and captions.

Features in Chromebooks

Customize caption styles

Easily adjust caption size, color and typeface for a customized closed caption experience. Select “Captions” in your Chromebook’s accessibility settings to update these features.


Mono audio

People who are hard of hearing can select Mono Audio to play the same sound through both speakers so they don’t miss content in stereo sound. Select “Mono Audio” in your Chromebook’s accessibility settings to use this feature.

On-Screen Keyboard

Typing using a touchscreen or mouse, or use handwriting or dictation to enter information on the screen 


Touchpad Settings

Customize touchpad settings to enable automatic clicks, tap dragging or tap-to-click functionality. 


Keyboard Settings

Tailor keyboard settings to adjust the repeat rate, delay time and keyboard shortcuts.
