Starting at the KPBSD homepage (http://www.kpbsd.k12.ak.us), click the “district Gmail” button in the “Students & Parents” tab. From there, students log in by entering their student ID and password. If this is their first time logging in, the password will be a 6-digit default of their DOB: DDMMYY (but not MMDDYY; they are asked to change their password from the default right away)
Our courses use the Canvas LMS (learning management system, an online platform). Starting from the KPBSD homepage (http://www.kpbsd.k12.ak.us), click the red “Canvas” button in the center of the page. They will be taken to the same login page as with email, then redirected to their Canvas dashboard after logging in. From there, they only need to click on the name of the course they wish to work on (displayed as a rectangular tile). Once in a Canvas course, you’ll see a “Start Here” button on the home page. That takes you to the introductory module that starts with an introductory video and tour of the course.
There are suggested due dates for all assignments in Distance Learning Canvas courses, and it’s in your student’s best interest to follow the suggested pacing guide; however, there are special circumstances where students cannot meet the pacing guide and fall behind. Whatever the circumstance, students are not punished for turning in assignments late, and can receive up to full credit even if that assignment is turned in late. A student has up to the last week of a semester to turn in work and earn the grade they want. Flexible pacing, and alternative assignments are available on a case-by-case basis. If your student wishes to simply earn credit, and the quality of the grade does not matter, work with your instructor to formulate a credit track (“C,” “D,” or “P” track).
Assignments are graded as they come in, usually within 24 hours (exceptions may be over weekends). If an assignment has not been turned in by the due date, a zero is entered in the gradebook as a placeholder until the assignment gets turned in; the zero goes away as soon as the assignment is turned in. There is no penalty for late work (assignments are not graded down if they are turned in late). Grades are synced (sent) from Canvas to PowerSchool regularly (several times per week if not daily). Multiple attempts are allowed for many assignments. If you need another attempt on a quiz or locked assignment, please email your instructor and ask for it to be unlocked for another attempt. Zeros that are a result of academic dishonesty will stay as zeros unless other arrangements are made during conference (see our “Citing Sources and Plagiarism” page).
