Academic Integrity Policy
Policy highlights:
Any submittal that does not represent a student’s personal work and understanding of the topics is an academic integrity violation.
The initial consequence may be a zero on the assignment and a guardian contact.
A student sharing their own original work to be used dishonestly by another student is subject to the same consequences.
Multiple violations can result in a student being withdrawn from the course. This includes situations where the second offense is in a different course or semester.
Students who have been withdrawn from a course may not be able to take future Distance Learning courses.
Students may also be subject to consequences at their school.
Spotlight on AI (Artificial Intelligence):
AI is a useful tool for learning, and we are committed to cultivating student skills and critical thinking surrounding the use of AI through conversations, course material and feedback to students.
The use of AI is an encouraged part of the learning process in partnership with the student's own critical thinking, analysis, additions and edits.
Students should acknowledge and cite the use of AI as appropriate for their work.
The use of AI as the sole contributor to a work or assignment submitted by a student is a violation of the academic integrity policy.
Example:
You cannot just type a question into ChatGPT, or a problem into a math app, copy and paste the answer, and expect to get credit.
You can type a question into ChatGPT, or a problem into a math app, if the assignment states it is allowed in the instructions as an initial step in the work that you add to, edit or otherwise improve. You MUST acknowledge the use of AI when you submit the assignment.
Distance Learning courses require students to work independently on the majority of their learning tasks. With that independence comes high expectations for academic integrity. Your course submittals must represent your own personal work and comprehension of the subject matter. Besides being dishonest, generating responses or work by any other means will spoil your opportunity to learn.
Clearly, we expect that you will not attempt to attain answers or work from other students who are taking or have taken these courses or from anyone else, including copying online resources. Assume that you need to work on your assignments individually unless otherwise specified by the course instructor. If you need to research or consult sources to complete your assignment, we expect that you will cite those sources properly.

A student sharing their own original work to be used dishonestly by another student is subject to the same consequences. Two or more academic integrity offenses in Distance Learning courses may lead to a student being withdrawn from the course and prohibited from taking future Distance Learning courses. This includes situations where the second offense is in a different course or semester.
In egregious cases of academic dishonesty, students may be immediately withdrawn from the course. Examples of egregious violations include submitting several assignments that are not original work with little to no evidence of sincerely engaging in the course’s instructional material and activities. Students are also subject to their school’s academic integrity policies.
Plagiarism FAQs
We encourage you to explore and consult any and all resources that will enrich your understanding of the course subject matter, but at all costs, avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism may be intentional, but occasionally students plagiarize simply because they do not know what plagiarism is or how to avoid it.

What is plagiarism?
Plagiarism is using other people’s words or ideas without giving them credit. It’s pretending that someone else’s work is your own. The Plagiarism Spectrum shares 10 different types of plagiarism with examples.
So is it OK to use other people’s words or ideas as long as I give them credit?
Yes, but you should use mainly your own words and ideas. As a guideline, make sure your writing is 90 percent your own words and ideas. Use citations for the other 10 percent.
How do I give someone else credit when I use his or her words or ideas?
Usually by providing a citation, which is typically the person’s last name and a page number in parentheses, and a works cited (MLA) or references (APA) page, which shows where you got the other person’s words or ideas. If you don’t know how to do citations or put together a works cited/references page, contact your teacher or look it up. One good source is the Purdue Online Writing Lab.
So all I have to do to use someone else’s words or ideas is to provide citation?
Not necessarily. If you use someone else’s exact words, those words must be inside quotation marks. Then you still need to add a citation.
How about if I change the order of the words or use a mixture of my own words and borrowed words?
You still need to use a citation, and any phrases or words that you borrow must be inside quotation marks.
What if I use someone else’s ideas but express them entirely in my own words?
You’re still using someone else’s work, so you need to give credit by using a citation. If it’s not your own original idea, chances are you need to give credit.
What kinds of information do not require citation?
In addition to your own original ideas, commonly known facts do not require a citation. For instance, you can write, "George Washington was the first president", without providing a citation.
Protocols
First academic integrity offense:
Contact student regarding the academic integrity concern. Give student the opportunity to explain their actions.
If it is established that an academic integrity violation occurred, student may receive a zero on those assignments with the possibility of redoing those at the teacher’s discretion. Student’s guardian and a school representative will be notified.
Multiple/egregious offenses:
Teacher will schedule a meeting to discuss the academic integrity violations and consider if student should remain in the course. The following people are recommended to attend the meeting:

Student
Parents/Guardians of student
Representative of the student’s school (e.g. administrator, counselor, supervising teacher).
