I can
In phonics this week, we are working on blending CVC words and recognizing our high-frequency words. Below are the words that we have already explicitly taught in Kindergarten.
I, me, my, like, see, look, and, to, we, go.
To reinforce learning high-frequency words at home, you can make flashcards and put these words around the room. You can then tell you student a word and they have to go search for that word in the room.
To incorporate writing into phonics, you can also have your student practice writing sentences with these words. The more exposure to reading and writing these words, the faster you child will be able to recognize them in a text.
I can review what reading workshops look like, sound like, and feel like while showing CHAMPS expectations.
This week we are reviewing expectations for independent and partner reading. As we dive deep into reading groups and moving students in and out of reading level groups, we wanted to make sure to really focus on expectations so we can all be successful in the classroom.
I can
This week we are reviewing writing practices to help us be the best writers we can! We are continuing to practice writing sentences, labeling our illustrations, use correct capitalization and finger spaces.
To support this skill at home, you can encourage your writers to come up with sentences to add to their drawings and help them try their best to write them. Additionally, you can finger spaces between words and labels.
I can read, write, and represent numbers to 20.
This week we took our report card assessment on 2D and 3D shapes. We are introducing teen numbers.
I can describe a need and a want.
This week, we are talking about needs versus wants. We focused on needs being things that we have to have to survive such as water, food, and shelter. Wants are things that it would be nice to have, but it isn't necessary to survive.
