I can
I can use patterns to help me read.
This week we are working on reading books with patterns. Reading these types of books help us recognize sight words quicker and also helps with reading with one to one correspondence. This means that if the book says "I like to play" the students aren't saying "I like to play at the park with my sister". We have been working on stopping students when they read too many words and ask them to count the words on the page and see if it matches what they read.
To support this at home, you can fold a piece of blank paper and write a simple pattern book. Below is an example. Students can count the words on each page and put a dot under each word to help them with not adding additional words.
Title Page: I Am Dancing
Page 1: I like to jump.
Page 2: I like to twirl.
Page 3: I like to dance.
I can add longer labels to my writing and write using snap words.
This week, we are continuing to write Show & Tell Books that describe important people. While writing these books, we are continuing to discus how to use longer labels in our illustrations to describe our drawings. We are also focusing on using snap words (the, like, my, on, and, it, is, to) in those labels and sentences.
To support this skill at home, you can encourage your writer to add labels with multiple words to their drawings, and to use snap words to help them label and write about their illustrations.
I can identify and describe 2D shapes including squares, rectangles, circles and triangles.
This week we will continue our geometry unit. We are learning about the interchangeable vocabulary like edges or sides and vertices or corners.
This week we are learning about our 2D shapes: circles, triangles, and squares, and rectangles.
To support this at home, you can have your child go on a shape hunt around the house or as you're driving ask them what shape they see. For example, in the Target logo, what shape is it?
I can identify that light is a form of energy and describe what causes shadows.
This week, we are exploring the world around us and specifically noticing how light impacts what we can see in our lives. We are observing light in various forms (sunlight, flashlights, etc.), and making claims about how light affects what we can/cannot see.
