I can
In phonics this week, we are working on blending CVC words and recognizing our high-frequency words. Below are the words that we have already explicitly taught in Kindergarten.
I, me, my, like, see, look, and, to, we, go, is.
To reinforce learning high-frequency words at home, you can make flashcards and put these words around the room. You can then tell you student a word and they have to go search for that word in the room.
To incorporate writing into phonics, you can also have your student practice writing sentences with these words. The more exposure to reading and writing these words, the faster you child will be able to recognize them in a text.
I can read with one to one correspondence.
One to one correspondence is extremely important in Kindergarten. This means that students read the exact number of words that are on the page. If a sentence says "I like dogs." we want to make sure they are not saying "I like brown dogs because they are cute." When this happens in class, we stop the students, ask them to count how many words are on the page, and then reread the page with only that amount of words. One to one correspondence is an important skill as your little ones are learning to read.
To reinforce this at home, you can write simple sentences with the high-frequency words listed on the left and have your students count the words and then read the words.
I can make text to text and text to self connections.
During our read alouds, we are focusing on making connections to our own life (text to self) and connections to other books that we have read (text to text).
I can write true stories.
This week we are writing true stories! We are practicing telling about a true event that happened to us so we can write it in a book. We are continuing to practice writing sentences, labeling our illustrations, use correct capitalization and finger spaces.
To support this skill at home, you can encourage your writers to come up with sentences to add to their drawings and help them try their best to write them. Additionally, you can finger spaces between words and labels.
I can read, write, and represent numbers to 20.
This week we will learn the remainder of our teen numbers 13-20.
I can talk about patterns in the sky and objects that I see in the sky during the day and night.
This week, we are talking about patterns in the sky and objects in the sky. We have focused on the moon, stars, and sun and what time of day you see those objects the best.
