I can read, write, and recognize my sight words.
Sight words will continue to be an integral part of our learning . Here are the words that we have already learned. Please make sure your students are practicing their sight words daily to help them with their reading!
Words that were tested in Middle of the Year:
I, me, my, like, see, look, and, to, we, go, is
Words that we have already learned that will be tested in the End of the Year:
it, an, be, we, did, to, said, at, in, went, for, was, on, up, you, he, get, am, play, park
To reinforce learning high-frequency words at home, you can make flashcards and have students practice daily before they read the books in their book bags.
To incorporate writing into phonics, you can have your student practice writing sentences with these words in it. The more exposure to reading and writing these words, the faster you child will be able to recognize them in a text.
I can learn about my superpowers of rereading.
In reading, we are learning about our superpower of rereading and why it is important.
Rereading to make our reading more fluent and smooth
Rereading with punctuation in mind (pausing after the punctuation marks)
Rereading to help us read words in a snap (the more we read a text, the faster we recognize the words on the page!)
Rereading to help us better understand what is happening in the text
To reinforce this super power at home, have your students reread the books in their book bags that are sent home weekly focusing on the points above.
I can write a how-to book.
In writing, we are starting to learn to write how-to books and talking about the importance of putting steps in order with details.
For example, this week we wrote about the steps to brush our teeth.
First, you get your toothbrush and toothpaste.
Next, you turn on the water and get your toothbrush wet.
Then, you put toothpaste on your toothbrush.
Finally, you brush your teeth.
To support this skill at home, encourage your students to tell you the steps on how to do something. Some examples could include how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, how to ride a bike, ect.
I can join or add numbers up to 10.
This week we will finish learning about addition. Please see the parent letter below for additional details and ways to practice at home.
As we introduce number sentences, the above format is a template that can assist students. By the end of the unit, the goal will be that they can independently write the sentence without the template.
I can identify who citizens are and how they help us.
This week, we are talking about citizens and different ways they can keep us safe and help us.
