Composting is coming to Franklin High School!!
For those who don't know why compost is important, it creates healthier soil, producing better plant growth and improved water quality. Also, it reduces methane emissions because the food/trash would be reused instead of sitting in a landfill. Why throw out food and waste it when you could just as easily compost and allow it to be reused? With only 5% of foods in the U.S. being composted, the country is missing out on a great process that benefits the environment which in turn helps humans.
Franklin High School does compost in the cafeteria, but only in the kitchen. Thanks to the initiative of Emelia Chambers and help of Dr. Weber and Mr. Walsh, Franklin will add a compost bin in the near future for the students. The compost bin will be a place where students can throw away any food they didn’t eat. However, lunch trays will be stacked to avoid overflowing the bin. Volunteers will be needed during lunch to oversee the sorting of the food during lunches. Below is a list of where each item will go.
Compost: all food scraps, napkins, trays/salad bowls(need to be stacked first)
Recycling: plastic utensils, plastic bags (i.e. apple slice bags), milk/juice cartons
Trash: anything else
Franklin will be working with Agri Cycle, a company that will collect the trash in the bin and compost it every week. If students need community service hours, sorting through the bins will be an opportunity available to any interested student. Email Emelia Chambers if you have any interest.
Be sure to participate and support the compost initiative!!!
