Tri-M President Devon Barry gave a speech at the Tri-M induction ceremony. Accomponied by Mrs. Rudsit and other Tri-M officers Emelia Chambers, Aubrey Stott, Adyson Lincourt, Arsh Tyagi
Devon is a senior here at Franklin High School, who plays the alto saxophone in the Wind Ensemble. She has also been a part of numerous jazz camps, plays in a jazz combo after school, and participated in the Newport Jazz Camp last summer. Devon said that she initially joined Tri-M her sophomore year because she thought it seemed cool that there was a National Honor Society specific to music. When asked about her factor part she said "the community that it fosters. It brings poeple with deep love of music together"
I then asked Devon a bit about what Tri-M is, what they do, and how one would go about joining. She told me that Tri-M meets once a month on Wednesdays, and has about 40-50 members for the 2025-2026 school year, and they just had their new member induction ceremony last month! At the ceremony they celebrate what Tri-M is, what it stands for, and why it’s important.
They also congratulate the new members, and have a chamber concert immediately following the ceremony. Tri-M does a lot of community service work, helping at music events across the schools, and also playing at senior homes, in Shaws, Birchwood Bakery, and brings business to a lot of local areas.
Both their community service work, and school based work both help to raise a lot of
awareness for the Franklin Music Department. Bringing music to the community is a great exposure and experience for Tri-M members, according to Devon.
She also said that it might surprise people, but Trim-M is “really low key, not as uptight as people might think”, and that there’s no pressure to be the best.
Wondering how to be eligible to join Tri-M? I was curious about the process too so I asked Devon about it. She let me in on the process and it’s actually fairly simple. Tri-M is open to any music student in the school in one of the music ensembles.
You also have to have been in music at least one year of high school and have an A- or higher in that music class before joining. Once a member, you need at least 11 music related community service hours per year, and 2 non ensemble-mandated performances.
Hope this encourages you to support the Franklin Music Department in their upcoming endeavors!
