Spanish NHS: A Night of Culture and Community

New Horizontes inductees after being initiated into the society (Syed Azhar)
Last Thursday, the Franklin High School (FHS) chapter of Spanish National Honor Society (Horizontes), had its annual induction ceremony in the library to initiate new members into its chapter, followed by a cultural food night where attendees and members could make, bring, and sample foods from all different Hispanic cultures.
Horizontes is the FHS branch of the national Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, an honor society that recognizes students achieving academic excellence in their Spanish and/or Portuguese classes. Each year, members of the Horizontes club at FHS complete projects such as translations for local places like the public library or fire station, or Spanish lessons to younger children at school, in hopes of promoting Hispanic culture in the Franklin community.
The ceremony began with a welcome to families and friends in attendance by vice president and FHS senior, Romane Celestin, a further introduction by more returning members, and finally, the pledge. New members pledged in Spanish, following the lead of the society's president and FHS senior, Daniel Oliveira. When Daniel read “todos” at the end of the pledge, the inductees blew out their candles, signaling their induction!
Club advisors Señora Evans and Señora Keenan also introduced awards for the year, including one for performance (Romane Celestin) and three for academic excellence in Spanish classes (Monica McIntyre, Julia McVeigh, Asher Martin). Congratulations to everybody who was recognized!
Next was the food tasting, the part of the night that everybody was waiting for! Dishes spanned all areas of Hispanic culture, including chips, tacos, chilaquiles, pastel de tres leches, enchiladas, and so much more! Over 100 attendees got to try new dishes from countries they may never have heard of before. Rori Bernheart, an FHS junior and new inductee, described the night as “a great source for community.”
Overall, the induction ceremony was an incredible night, truly showcasing the community we have here at FHS. We can’t wait to see what Horizontes will achieve this year! Make sure to keep up with Horizontes on Instagram @fhshorizontes. ¡Hasta luego!
