Geography helps you to make sense of the world around you. It's hands on and relevant to everyday life. The course will give you the chance to get to grips with some of the big questions which affect our world, and understand the social, economic and physical forces and processes which shape and change our world.
You will study both human and physical geography; exploring the physical features and characteristics of our planet, alongside the people that live on it.
You will constantly be learning through case study examples, helping you develop your understanding of communities and locations other than your own. You will also undertake fieldwork in both year 9 and 10, this involves formulating an enquiry question, getting out of the classroom to gather data, analysing the results and reaching conclusions.
There are three GCSE exams that will be sat at the end of Year 11:
Paper 1: Living with the physical environment
The Challenge of Natural Hazards
The Living World
Physical Landscapes in the UK
Paper 2: Challenges in the Human Environment
Urban Issues and Challenges
The Changing Economic World
The Challenge of Resource Management
Paper 3: Geographical Applications and Skills
Fieldwork Enquiry 1: How has coastal management in Walton on the Naze affected processes and communities?
Fieldwork Enquiry 2: How has regeneration in Stratford affected quality of life?
For the final exam paper, you will be required to draw together knowledge, understanding and skills from the full course of study. It is an opportunity for you to show your understanding and to evaluate the relationships between different aspects of geography.
Most students will have been studying Geography in Key Stage 3, and whilst there are no specific requirements to embark on this course, students who do the following tend to be the most successful:
Follow the news and have an awareness of current events
Think critically when presented with issues and have a curiosity and interest in the world around them
