The manager for your intern(s) will familiarize them with Fleet Feet (Store/Store Support Team), provide orientation, and supervision. This will be the go-to person who is available to the intern on a regular basis, and who possesses expertise in the area/department where the intern will work. The manager will assign projects/tasks, offer instruction and provide an ongoing evaluation. Those projects will align with the list of competencies or professional skills that the intern will be learning throughout the internship. Interns who rotate through various departments as part of their learning experience should be supervised by one person in each department.
Qualities to look for in an intern manager
Someone who is interested in working with college students
Has the time to invest in the internship experience and is passionate about creating a meaningful experience
Possesses qualities such as leadership, strong communication skills, and patience
Someone willing to collaborate with another department/intern manager
A staff member who is developing managerial skills/responsibilities (i.e. coaching role, providing guidance, assistance, and training)
An effective method of intern supervision is to set a regular time frame to meet one on one (typically daily or at minimum weekly) to review progress on projects, touch base, and provide feedback. A combination of informal touch bases (i.e. over lunch or coffee), as well as more formal meetings, are suggested.
