Learning From Mistakes
3-2-1 Test Review
You are each going to take a math test. Before we grade, code your questions like this:
+ I got this correct!
✓ I THINK I figured this one out.
-I may have missed this one.
After we grade it, you will complete the 3-2-1 Test Review
ABCD Reasoning Cards
I have cards ready for this activity. You can get your own copy here.
Each person in your group will be assigned A, B, C, or D. On the back of your card, explain why someone might pick your answer. Trade cards. Continue until all cards have a justification for all answers.
As a group, decide which is the best answer for each card.
Balloon Bop
We will all get into one big circle. We need one blue and one green balloon ready to play.
Follow the instructions on the Balloon Blop slides. You can get your own copy here.
I used the following 5th Science STAAR review for the question.
Brain in the Game
We will use these slides for Musical Mix-Freeze sorting.
Roam while the music is playing. When the music stops, connect with a partner and Analyze, Identify, and Predict information about your STAAR stimuli.
Catch and Release
Using a blue and green ball, students will share either a process statement (blue) or a content statement (green) based upon a question with a visual stimuli.
Students will learn to analyze the problem beginning to solve it.
Chatterbox
At each table, you will receive a set of Chatterboxes.
We will work together to cut them out and fold them.
Since they focus on general processing standards and problem solving questions, they can be used for most questions.
Each One Teach One
You will each receive a page with an assessment question on it. In our first step, you will group with the same colors (same question). After time to become experts at that question, we will begin mixing. You will eventually become an expert at each of the four problems.
Fixer Upper
For this activity, we will use the assessment we took on 3-2-1 Test Review. Choose the two questions you felt were the hardest and find a partner as you utilize the "fixer upper".
Focused Listening
For focused listening, we are going to focus on renewable and non-renewable energy sources.
Each group will start by brainstorming on their designated chart, then move to the others and review the ideas posted.
Each group will visit all charts on a rotation.
Go with the Flow
Using the math test from 3-2-1 Test Review, choose one question to use with Go with the Flow. This is intended for those most challenging questions after the test.
IQ Slap Down
Each pair will have a set of cards noting A, B, C, and D.
After reviewing each question, in Round 1 students slap down the letter of the WORST ANSWER. In Round 2, students slap down the letter of the DISTRACTOR. In Round 3, students slap down the letter of the CORRECT ANSWER.
Make the Case
We are going to use an 8th Grade Released STAAR to practice our Make the Case skills.
Each group will be assigned an answer choice. The must decide "guilty" (incorrect) or "innocent" (correct) and justify their statement.
Pick Up the Slip Up
Each pair will have 1-3 number cards. As we look at each slide, you will decide which one is the Slip Up.
Presto - Chango!
We will be using a passage from the 5th Grade 2019 Reading STAAR for this activity.
We will take a moment to read the passage in each group. Then I will show you questions from the passage without the multiple choice options. After we find the text evidence, we will look at the multiple choice options.
Rock and Roll Item Review
I modified the original page to accommodate 4 questions.
Using the Keeping Kool passage from the 5th Grade 2019 Reading STAAR, we will use the dice and partners to work through the questions.
Toss A Question
I created six different pages from the STAAR Grade 5 Science May 2021 Released test.
Each group will start with a different assessment question. Each group will complete Round 1 on their page, then toss their snowball and collect a different assessment question for the next round.
Round 1: Analyze the stimulus and explain why it is important
Round 2: Identify and describe 3-5 key terms
Round 3: Predict the big idea
Round 4: Justify the best answer
Round 5: Justify the worst answer
Round 6: Predict a careless mistake and how to avoid it
Triad Trades
The instructions use full pages for each piece of the triad. I made a template with all three pieces on one sheet of paper that can be cut into thirds.
Each pair or group will work on one Triad (a copy for each student). Then they will mingle around and find a new group. Each member of the new group will share their work. Their new group can challenge the thinking or add a response to further support the conclusion.
Yes, No, Maybe So
This activity is perfect for the multiple selection format of the NEW STAAR test types.
Present one question at a time without revealing the correct answer.
Group students and give them one answer selection to discuss. Have each group determine if their selection is "Yes, No, Maybe So" a correct solution for this problem. They will need to justify their conclusion.
