Elkhorn Public Schools Teacher Cadet Program allows a high school senior the opportunity to volunteer in an elementary or middle school classroom to gain insight into the career field of education while developing the skills needed to be successful in a career working with youth.
The goal of our program is to provide our students with a knowledge and experience that will empower them as they pursue their occupational goals.
Through class assignments, teacher cadets will:
Develop their own digital teacher portfolio.
Gain employment skills.
Learn workplace etiquette.
Discuss teacher cadet experiences.
Refine workplace competencies.
Interact with students on a daily basis.
Assist supervising teachers in making a difference in their students’ lives.
Ideally, the teacher cadet period is set up in the morning from 8:10 - 9:45 a.m. or in the afternoon from 1:45 - 3:15 p.m., but this educational experience may occur anytime during the school day.
It is strongly recommended that teacher cadets have completed the child development class. This experience allows them to apply the principles of instruction and lesson planning taught there.
The senior begins their cadet experience at the high school. During this first week, the cadet reviews development, discipline, and lesson planning theories.
Throughout the semester, the cadet will turn in assignments to the Career Awareness Advisor that reinforces these concepts as well as other educational concerns.
