Maslenitsa

Submitted by Zilya Sharafullina

I want to tell you about the Russian holiday Maslenitsa. Maslenitsa is the week before Lent. It's when Russians say goodbye to winter and welcome to spring. It's a time of singing, dancing and fun. There's a lot to eat, delicious butter pancakes. Pancakes are round, yellow, hot as the sun. Children dress up and play in the snow, they have snowball fights.

Organizers of the holiday make a straw doll of "Lady Maslenitsa", who is dressed in special clothes. On the final day of the holiday, they burn "Lady Maslenitsa". The spring festival is over and Lent begins.
