Afghan Rugs: An Ancient Traditional Art
Submitted by Munira Ragub
Many handmade rugs are naturally made in northern Afghanistan. But they are made in different places, too. Afghan people have been making rugs for centuries. They are mostly made of vegetable-dyed, hand-spun Afghan wool. There are two types of rugs, Turkmen and Baluchi. Most rugs are made by women, but the men help to sell them.
The rugs are actually pretty expensive because people all over the world buy them. There are good reasons that they are popular and expensive. The people have to go through so much hard work just to make one rug. From gathering the wool to weaving just one rug, it takes 6 to 8 months.
I have a rug of my own that I brought with me from Afghanistan. It is really sturdy, it can easily get cleaned and the colors never fade away. I have had it for years and it still looks the same as when I got it.
