Música Norteña

Submitted by Gustavo Alejo

Some people call it Norteño or Norteña. It is also called Música Norteña. It is a genre of Regional Mexican music from Northern Mexico, hence the name. The music is most often based on double and triple meters and it often deals with socially relevant topics. Although there are also many Norteño love songs, I love the dance songs.

We men like to wear hats and boots like a cowboy. In my state actually, we still dress like this. I like to dress like this because it is the kind of music that I like, and I like to dress like them. In my town Nabojoa, Sonora Mexico at weddings or any kind of parties, we play this kind of Norteňa music.

People dance this type of dance in many states of Mexico. Dancing like this is part of our culture. My dad and mom's generation also dance this style of music and so have many people over the years.
