Unit 5: Child Protection:

1. Keeping Yourself Safe

Dates: 5B 03.21.19, 5C 03.22.19, 5D 03.25.19, 5A 03.26.19

Concepts: When you're on your own or just with friends, you are responsible for your own safety. It's important to know what to do and who to contact in case of emergency.

Ways to Stay Safe:

          • Recognize: Is it safe?
          • Report: Tell an adult.
          • Refuse: Say words that mean no.

We Can: Apply the Ways to Stay Safe in response to scenarios. Recognize, report, refuse.

We Will: Use the Ways to Stay Safe in real life scenarios.

Unit 5: Child Protection:

2. Always Ask First

Dates: 5B 03.27.19, 5C 03.28.19, 5D 03.29.19, 5A 04.01.19

Concepts: Always ask a parent or the person in charge first before going somewhere, doing something, or accepting something from someone. (Always Ask First Rule) Following the Always Ask First Rule helps you stay safe. If you are on your own, waiting until you can ask first will help keep yourself safe.

We Can: Identify how to apply the Always Ask First Rule in response to scenarios. Identify how to use the Ways to Stay Safe in response to scenarios.

We Will: Practice situations when to use the Ways to Stay Safe and Always Ask First Rule to be able to apply to real life situations.

Unit 5: Child Protection:

3. Unsafe and Unwanted Touches

Dates: 5B 04.02.19, 5C 04.03.19, 5D 04.04.19, 5A 04.05.19

Concepts: Your body belongs to you. Unsafe touches are never okay. Paying attention to uncomfortable feelings in your body can help you recognize unwanted touches. You can refuse any unwanted touch, even if it's safe.

We Can: Understand the difference between unsafe and unwanted touches. Identify and refuse unsafe and unwanted touches in response to scenarios.

We Will: Learn and practice how to refuse and report unwanted touches.

4. The Private Body Parts Rule

Dates: 5B 04.08.19, 04.09.19 All 5th grade choir practice in gym., 5C 04.10.19, snow day 04.11.19, 5D 04.12.19, 5A 04.15.19

Concepts: Using the Ways to Stay Safe helps you stay safe if someone breaks the Private Body Parts Rule.

The Private Body Parts Rule is: Private body parts are private. No one should ever:

        • Touch yours, except a doctor or nurse (with a chaperone in the room) for medical reasons.
        • Ask to see yours, except a doctor or nurse (with a chaperone in the room) for medical reasons.
        • Make you look at his or hers, or anyone else's
        • Never touch anyone else's

We Can: Understand all the parts of the Private Body Parts Rule. Recognize when someone is breaking the Private Body Parts Rule. Report the broken Private Body Parts Rule in response to scenarios.

We Will: Learn and practice how to refuse and report unwanted touches.

5. Practicing the Ways to Stay Safe

Concepts: Never keep secrets about someone breaking the Private Body Parts Rule. It's never your fault if someone else breaks the Private Body Parts Rule. Breaking the Private Body Parts Rule is wrong. People who break it may do things to keep it a secret.

We Can: Identify what people who break the Private Body Parts Rule do to keep it secret. Report broken Private Body Parts Rules in response to scenarios.

We Will: Learn and practice how to refuse and report unwanted touches.

Unit 6: Career Exploration:

1. Career Exploration Project: Research and create a Google Slide show on your career choice.

Google Slide Show: Detailed job description, pros/cons, photos/videos, path to get there, salary, the skills you need, location, and high school classes to take.

Concepts: Research and learn about a career topic to present to the class. Each student will present a different career topic, so others can learn about a variety of career options.

We Can: Present a Google Slide Show about our selected career and communicate important topics such as: Detailed job description, pros/cons, photos/videos, path to get there, salary, the skills you need, location, high school classes to take.

We Will: Create a Google Slide Show about our selected career and present the following information to the class: Detailed job description, pros/cons, photos/videos, path to get there, salary, the skills you need, location, high school classes to take. The presentations will help each student learn about different career options and the path to get there.
