YEAR 1 TERM 3 LESSON 4

ABORIGINAL SEASONS

Learning Intention: We will learn about the different Aboriginal seasons in the Wurundjeri (Melbourne) area.

We know that there are four seasons: Summer Autumn, Winter and Spring. But did you know that the Aboriginal people who live in our area know that there is actually seven (7) seasons?

SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER IS POORNEET SEASON: TADPOLE SEASON

The seven Wurundjeri seasons in the Woi Wurrung language are:

  • Biderap, Dry Season (Jan-Feb)

  • Iuk, Eel Season (March)

  • Waring, Wombat Season (April-July)

  • Guling, Orchid and Wattle Season (Aug)

  • Poorneet, Tadpole Season (Sept-Oct)

  • Buarth Gurru, Grass Flowering Season (Nov)

  • Garrawang, Kangaroo-Apple Season (Dec)

This week is the start of Poorneet in the Wurundjeri calendar. The Spring Equinox in September marks our local Kulin indigenous season, ‘Poorneet’ – Tadpole Season. Growling grass frogs mate and lay their eggs in foamy rafts along reedy banks, and they hatch into darting tadpoles. The ground begins to warm as pied currawongs fill the air with their pretty warbling song, joining magpies in their evening calling concerts. Joeys leave the pouch for daytime adventures in the sun. Poorneet Tadpole Season, (September and October) is when temperatures rise, rain continues and the days and nights are of equal length.
