ABORIGINAL PLANTS AND THEIR USES

The Aboriginal people of Australia lived off the land. They looked after the land to make sure that the land would continue to provide for them.

Plants played a very important role in Aboriginal life. Plants were used for:

clothing

shelter

FOOD

medicine

tools and equipment

drinks

weapons

All Aboriginal people used a similar range of equipment which included

  • netting and trapping equipment

  • digging sticks

  • cutting and chopping tools

  • hunting and fighting equipment eg spears, boomerangs

  • equipment to prepare food e.g. grinding stones

  • containers eg bowls (coolamons)
