WURUNDJERI CUSTOMS: WELCOME TO COUNTRY

The place where we live, work, play and learn is called Wurundjeri Country. Mount Waverley is part of Wurundjeri Country. On the map below we are in section 12.

The language that the Aboriginal people of the Wurundjeri country speak is Woi Wurrung.

Wurundjeri Country is part of the Kulin Nation.

It is a custom for the Aboriginal people to welcome you to their land. Aboriginal people believe that they do not own the land, they are custodians of the land. This means that they take care of the land, just like your parents take care of you.

Aunty Joy is a Wurundjeri Elder and she is going to welcome you to live, work, play and learn on Wurundjeri land. Watch the videos below to enjoy this custom and become part of the land.

Aunty Joy has also written a book about this custom. It is called Welcome To Country. Watch her reading the book below.

We cannot welcome people to country unless we are indigenous to that land. This is a very special custom that only Aboriginal people can do.

We can acknowledge and pay our respects to that custom though. This means that we are thanking them for allowing us to use the land and that we promise to take care of it. That is our custom.

The lyrics are:

We live on Wurundjeri land

We live on Wurundjeri land

Everyday we come together and learn on Wurundjeri land

Thank you Wurundjeri land

Thank you Wurundjeri land

Thank you Wurundjeri people for sharing your land
