Index laws 1 and 2
Learning goal
By the end of the lesson I will be able to simplify algebraic expressions using index laws 1 and 2 relating to products and quotients of terms written in index form
Success criteria
I am able to:
· simplify a product of terms using the first index law
· simplify a quotient of terms using the second index law
· simplify a combination of operations on terms using the first and second index laws
Index laws 3 and the zero power
Learning goal
By the end of the lesson I will be able to simplify algebraic expressions using index laws 3 relating to powers of terms written in index form
Success criteria
I am able to:
· simplify a power of terms using the third index law
· use a rule to simplify expressions with a power of zero
· simplify a combination of operations on terms using the first three index laws

By the end of the lesson I will be able to simplify algebraic expressions using index laws 4 and 5 relating to powers of products and quotients written in index form

Scientific notation

By the end of the lesson I will be able to use scientific notation to write any decimal number in standard form

· write numbers greater than 1 in standard form
· write numbers between 0 and 1 in standard form
· write numbers greater than 1 given in scientific notation in decimal form
· write numbers between 0 and 1 given in scientific notation in decimal form
Scientific notation using significant figures
Learning goal
By the end of the lesson I will be able to round off numbers using significant figures in decimal form and scientific notation
Success criteria
I am able to:
· state the number of significant figures for a given decimal number
· write a decimal number to a given number of significant figures
· write a decimal number to a given number of significant figures in scientific notation
· use a calculator to perform operations of numbers in scientific notation
