A DISTRICT PLAYBOOK FOR EFFECTIVE POSTSECONDARY DATA PRACTICE
When understood and used well, data can be a powerful tool to impact student outcomes. In education, data has already transformed teaching and learning – now it can do the same for postsecondary readiness and success. This playbook offers practical steps to build a coherent, student-centered data ecosystem that informs decisions, closes gaps, and supports every learner’s journey to succeed in college, career, and life.
Data Leadership
Data Leadership is the foundation of effective postsecondary data practice. When leaders signal that they value postsecondary outcomes in how they define district strategy, set goals, and allocate resources, they make it possible to develop coherent data infrastructure and strong data use related to those outcomes. When postsecondary data is not available, accurate, or used, gaps in the building blocks of Data Leadership can be the root cause.
🏫 Featured Examples: Los Angeles USD, Jackson Public Schools, YouthForce NOLA
Data Infrastructure
Data infrastructure makes it possible to translate high-level vision, strategy, and goals into concrete data points that districts can use to drive and assess impact. When postsecondary data is consistently defined and collected, “clean” and connected across multiple sources, and reported in ways that match the needs and responsibilities of end users, districts set the table for effective data use. Conversely, problems with data consistency, accuracy, access, and/or relevance can foil even the most ambitious plans for effective data use.
🏫 Featured Examples: Metro Nashville Public Schools, Knox County Schools, Desert Sands USD
Data Use
While data Leadership and data Infrastructure are both essential elements of effective postsecondary data practice, the only way that data can ultimately improve student outcomes is if practitioners actually use it. To drive effective postsecondary data use, districts can embed postsecondary data into staff training and professional development, routines for continuous improvement, and the design and implementation of core postsecondary advising and advising-related interventions.
🏫 Featured Examples: Hamilton County Schools, Beaufort County Schools, Chicago Public Schools
