Have you had to walk into the cafeteria and eat in five minutes because it's time to return to learning? Well, we have. Sometimes we sit down and before the blink of an eye, Mrs. Cathy, our lunch aide, says, “Two minutes – hurry up.”
We, fifth graders, have from about roughly 1:36-1:52, which is barely any time for our tiny mouths and big stomachs. And to make it worse, at the end of lunch, there are still buyers emerging from the kitchen with a tray full of food. We believe that all buyers and non-buyers should have the same time to eat, even if it means buyers staying back in the cafeteria for longer.
The lunch aides of Menlo Park Elementary exert a lot of energy into making sure students are being responsible, so we can’t blame them if they yell at us once or twice. The fantastic chefs at Menlo Park Elementary prepare hundreds of lunches every day. Also, the lunch aides aren’t just our lunch aides. They’re also lunch aides for many
other classes. So we can’t blame them.
Menlo Park Elementary has the option to buy lunches and sometimes kids don’t get enough time to eat! Can you believe how cruel that is? About three-quarters of the 5th Grade buy food! Classes take turns going first to buy lunch every day. There’s always a class that has to go last. This class comes out of the lunch room with a tray of food they would like to eat! But when they come out, they have just a few minutes before the lunch lady says “Clean up. Pack up” or “2 minutes hurry up!”
Lastly, if you still don’t agree with us. We asked A MILLION PEOPLE (seemed like it) And… WE GOT SOME MIXED AND INTERESTING RESPONSES. Out of 33 responses from fifth graders, only 15.2% (or five people) said no.
A classmate, Saindhavi said, “I strongly believe that we should have more lunch time because the fourth graders are VERY slow at lining up! Also, students need food more than anyone here. Some kids eat lunch in their classrooms because of the fact that we do not have enough time to EAT. Students spend six hours in school trying to educate their brains, but eating gives energy to our bodies. WE NEED FOOD!”
As you can see, people are very enthusiastic about lunchtime, but, some people still say no. One of them was Ayushman, who said, “No because people still won’t finish their food. And how much time do we need to eat a small meal?”
In conclusion, 5th graders have a meager amount of lunchtime and need more.
Menlo Park Elementary has only two sports clubs: cricket and soccer. Not everyone enjoys or likes these sports. Personally, I think all kids should be able to have a variety of sports they can try or do. For example, we could have a basketball, tennis, volleyball, softball, and even a badminton club!
Personally, I think it's important to have friends – you can talk to them and even play with them. Many kids can be shy and only have 1 or 2 friends or maybe even none. More sports clubs help kids socialize. This will also help with school and studies. If kids learn to socialize, they can ask questions when they are confused or work better with partners during class.
Another reason why we need more sports clubs is for good health. Kids should get about an hour of exercise each day. For some kids walking around in school could be the only exercise they get the whole day. If we had more sports clubs, more kids would be interested in sports. This would result in fewer kids sitting around or wasting their time. It also helps you focus during class. Having a good exercise schedule helps our brains think faster and more clearly.
My final reason why there should be more sports clubs is that it would be fun. Our school does not have many clubs and not many people join them. Adding sports clubs would increase the number of clubs and the kids that join them. Kids can have a fun time and join friends or classmates.
Menlo Park Elementary should add more sports clubs for better health, improve socializing skills, and for more kids to have fun!
Editor's Note: Since publication, Basketball Club has been added as a club at Menlo Park School.
Isn’t it so unfair that we can’t stay overnight in Camp Bernie? Well, I think it is so unfair. Students had a chance to miss a day of school and not get counted as absent. Shouldn't everyone have an opportunity to know what it's like in a cabin?
Camp Bernie is filled with fun activities that everybody would enjoy like archery, rock climbing, and even walking on ropes! Overnighters get to do all activities for the two days they stay, while we only got four activities in one day.
Those who stayed overnight had three meals, while we only had two. Also, they could stay and sleep in cabins for a night, and not be counted as being absent the following day! Students missed two school days to do fun activities.
If you ever go to Camp Bernie you would one hundred percent want to be in a cabin. Overall, being in a cabin is fun, and fifth graders should have the opportunity to camp overnight.
Have you ever wanted to play an instrument? Maybe viola, violin or cello? Well then, that's great! You can play these instruments at school. But let's say you wanted to play a different string instrument. What could you do? Sadly, you can't do much because those are the only string instrument choices at Menlo Park Elementary. But should it be that way?
Many students at Menlo Park may not like or enjoy playing those instruments. For example, what if you wanted to play guitar or the ukulele? You wouldn’t be able to play the instrument you want.
Another reason there should be more choices is because it would be a fun hobby for students who are interested. Instead of playing video games and watching TV all day, they could learn and enjoy something new.
Also, how would you learn to play the instrument you want? It would be challenging to do so. YouTube tutorials and other online tools may be helpful,
but it would be better at school or with a real teacher.
These are some reasons why I think there should be more string instrument choices at Menlo Park Elementary.
