WALKING SHARKS!!! You have imagined them, and now they are real.
Epaulette sharks are able to walk, both along the seafloor and across land for short distances due to specially adapted pectoral fins and musculature, which is the system of muscles in a body, part of the body, or an organ. By breathing slowly, and decreasing the heart rate, these sharks can survive without water for up to an hour!
People are terrified, yet interested in the Epaulette sharks. They're appearing around Australia, Papua New Guinea, and Indonesia.
These sharks are small, one of the smallest, but scientists hope this could lead to larger developments with bigger sharks being able to walk on land. True, this could become dangerous, but right now, studies are being run on these animals to learn about their development on land.
You wake up, get dressed, brush your teeth, and eat breakfast. Everything is normal. Until it’s not. You are about to go to the bus stop, but your mom or dad stops you and tells you that school is going to be online starting today. It’s going to take a long time for you to get used to that since going on the bus is your usual routine. Welcome to the covid life.
You might be wondering, what exactly is Covid-19? Covid-19 is a novel coronavirus, which means that it is a disease that scientists and
doctors didn’t have experience treating initially. It attacks the lungs, which affects breathing problems. It targets the elderly, those who have a weak or weakened immune system and people who have had serious diseases. It started earlier in 2021. Some people say that Covid came from a zoonotic disease, some say it came from a laboratory.
Now you might be wondering about why it spread so much. Well there are a lot of reasons. Initially, people weren’t serious about masks. There were no clear instructions and a lot of confusion and rumors. Covid widely spread because it is highly contagious. Plus it's airborne. There are also a lot of asymptomatic people that have Covid, but they don’t show any signs at all. Because of that, they may not get treated and the spreading will go on. There were shortages of hospitals, the lack of oxygen, and the lack of doctors and nurses. This caused a global pandemic.
I interviewed a few people and asked them how they feel about Covid and how it has affected their lives. Ayaan P., a fifth grader says, “It’s horrible. My mask is uncomfortable and I miss normal school activities like assemblies. I can’t go outside. I can’t meet my friends. My parents put restrictions like that I have to go outside with someone.”
Anvita N., another fifth grader also says, “It’s scary. It made me stay home for two weeks. I took my first dose of the vaccine.”
Mrs. Kregeloh, a fifth grade ELA teacher says, “I dislike it. It has changed the way I teach and how much I travel.”
Mrs. Sileski, another fifth grade teacher, says, “ I dislike it. I have to wear a mask.”
Coronavirus, or Covid-19 for short, is a part of our lives now. Stay healthy! And most important of all, stay safe!
