We will use the process of Sgraffito to create a black and white tile. You may choose between a Dia De Los Muertos Skull, or a black and white drawing
Sgraffito is a technique when underglaze is applied as an outer layer to either greenware or bisqueware, and then the artist creates a design or a drawing by scratching or carving away the underglaze to reveal either the clay or another layer of underglaze.
We are going to practice this on flat tiles that we first bisque fire with a layer of white underglaze.
Sketch out multiple Designs. Play with different head shapes, and decorative elements
***Consider, we will be scraping away black underglaze to reveal a white under layer. The more white space you have the more scraping or scratching you will have to do. ***
Then:
Create a finalized drawing where you blackout what will remain black in sharpie. You want this drawing to be about 4" - 5" tall. Anything smaller or larger becomes more difficult to work with.
We will use your final design to trace out your tile,
and design work so do your best.
