In this assignment, I may use some vocabulary you are not yet familiar with. Don't fret (worry) about it! Go with what you know, and by the end of this course it's my goal that you understand all this vocabulary.

Yes, I do expect you to watch this tutorial. In fact, you will be assigned a google check for understanding form regarding the instructions in GC.

I'm sorry this is the same video from my intro class. I did shoot a different one for you all, but I'm having technical difficulties recording the media off of the camera I used. Hopefully I won't run into this i in the future. Thank you for your patience.

You will prove to me that you understand all of the following instructions by completing this google form. (click where it's underlined)

It will be a daily grade, don't forget to mark it as done in google classroom.

Tools:

1. Sketchbook/ Drawing Paper

2. Pencil (number 2 is fine, but you can use HB, 4B, Ebony if you have those)

3. Eraser (If you have a kneaded eraser they are great, if not you can certainly make it work!)

4. Scrap paper for your hand

5. Pencil Sharpener

6. A place to work

7. Your Portrait Reference

Remember: I introduce projects during our live session, and then you complete the assignment at home at your own pace. You are not expected to finish an artwork during the live meet session.

Work Flow Recap

1: SKETCH

objective:

Lightly lay out the basic shapes, spaces, and proportions of the drawing.

Consider:

• Angles

• Measure Space

• Keep it light 'til you get it right. FLOW FREEEEE!

• Sketching in basic shapes and then refine.

• Don't be afraid to move your paper around

2: Contour Lines (Outter Edge Lines)

Consider:

• Darkness or Lightness (based off how hard you press)

• Thickness of the Line

• Angles

• Catch the line with your eye, record it with your pencil.

• Begin erasing/ cleaning the former light sketch lines

3: Shading Part 1

• Begin with some of your darker grays and mid-values.

• You can smudge with a paper towel over your finger, and then layer on top

• Layer your shading

• Consider the direction of your shading marks, it can help draw the viewer's eye around the form.

• Use your scrap paper to rest your hand on it so you won't smudge your drawing or get messy.

4: Shading Part 2

Create contrast and deepen all your values.

• Ask where your darkest darks are- think of their shape.

• Ask where your whitest highlights are and erase so there is white paper coming through. What are the shapes they create?

• If you have an ebony pencil- please use it.

5: Sign your Art

Normally I don't require that you sign the front of your drawing, but during distance learning I need you to do that.

6: Spray Fix your work

This is not a requirement, but it's a good habit to get into after you are done with a drawing. I can't tell you how many times a teenage Mrs. Thomas ruined her drawings from accidental smudging. But, I understand that some of you may not have access to fixative or hairspray.

What you will be Graded over:

1: Effort: 50 pts

2: Proportions: 25 pts

2: Shading: 25 pts

Due Date:

Monday Sept. 20th

This will count as an assessment grade, weighted at 60%.

Remember, you will know, I will know, and your studio-mates will know if you did not apply yourself.

It's crazy, but even if a drawing "doesn't look pretty" you can really tell who has applied themselves and who hasn't.
