Introduction to Emergency Medicine

Health Science Technology I

The five career pathways will be covered in depth, including therapeutic careers, diagnostic careers, health informatics, support services and biotechnology research and development. All education levels within these career pathways will be discussed, including careers that require a high school diploma, post-high school training/certificates, 2 and 4 year college degrees, master’s degrees and doctorates. Students demonstrate their learning by communicating in writing and in oral presentations and classroom activities. Membership in HOSA – Future Health Professionals is encouraged for students who are serious about pursuing any health career.

This hands-on course includes curriculum from the American Heart Association’s Heartsaver CPR/First Aid program. By the end of this half-year course, the students will have the opportunity to take the heartsaver CPR/First Aid certification test, which if passed will last 2 years. The students will also be introduced to the field of emergency medicine. Material includes information on vital signs, signs/symptoms of system failure and emergency medicine pharmacology. The students will perform emergency medicine skills including, but not limited to: responding to a code, taking vital signs, and blood glucose monitoring. Students demonstrate their learning by passing the AHA certification exam and performing classroom activities. Earn College Credit

Students learn the basics required of all health care employees, including professionalism, medical ethics, terminology, measurement of vital signs, structure and function of the human organism, basic disease processes, basic pharmacology, medical math and medication administration, infection control, and standard precautions. Students also explore all five health careers pathways: Therapeutic Services, Diagnostic Services, Health Informatics, Support Services and Biotechnology research and development. Skills labs include sterile medical procedures such as urinary catheterization, intravenous insertion and removal, dressing changes and others. Students demonstrate their learning in patient care simulations in the lab, and by giving oral presentations based on the Connecticut Standards for Medical Careers Education. Membership in HOSA- Future Health Professionals is encouraged.

Health Science Technology II

Nurse Assistant

Health Science & Technology I OR Careers in Health Science and Intro to Emergency Medicine

This project-based course allows students to take what they learned in Health Science & Technology I and apply it to authentic public health experiences while continuing to expand their knowledge of more advanced health science topics including, but not limited to: basic pharmacology, medical math and medication administration, isolation precautions, common diseases and their affects on the body. Students also explore more specific careers in all five health careers pathways: Therapeutic Services, Diagnostic Services, Health Informatics, Support Services and Biotechnology research and development. Skills labs include sterile medical procedures such as urinary catheterization, intravenous insertion and removal, dressing changes and others, documentation & charting, vital signs practice. Students demonstrate their learning in patient care simulations in the lab, and by giving oral presentations and performing EHHS community-based public health projects based off of the Connecticut Standards for Medical Careers Education. Membership in HOSA- Future Health Professionals is encouraged.

Students must complete application, interview, and teacher recommendation.

Students will acquire the necessary skills for employment upon graduation as a Certified Nurse Assistant. Classroom instruction is followed by clinical practice in a nursing home with potential for hospital experience. Course content includes medical terminology, infection control, and professional attitudes, and behaviors in dealing with patients and fellow staff members as specified in the state CNA curriculum. Skills acquired by the student are used in direct patient care, bed making, taking vital signs, and other activities to be performed in the clinical setting. Upon successful completion of both the classroom and clinical phases of the course, students are eligible to take the state certification exam which is given at EHHS. If they pass, they will be able to work as a Certified Nurse Assistant in nursing homes, hospitals, or other health settings. This course can be used as an introduction to a college degree program in medicine or nursing.
