A cross-functional leadership team sets a clear vision for the school, its culture, and what teaching
and learning look like before putting technology in classrooms.
All guiding questions are aligned to the element criteria located in the Portfolio Guide. Use the questions to guide your reflection on the artifacts to narrate your journey on the goals.
How does the campus leadership team model and collaborate with each other to support campus goals?
The Leadership Team at Akili Academy collaborate regularly to review data from teacher/student observations, Behavior Management Classroom (BMC) scores for teachers, and assessments from Exit Tickets to Interim Assessments (IAs). Leadership then takes this data to give evidence of meeting school goals or to make new/adjust goals that will continue to better the staff and students at Akili Academy.
2. How does the district leadership team support innovation and collaboration?
Crescent City Schools (CCS) CMO meets regularly with all school leaders to discuss school initiatives and goals that will continue the innovation of faculty and students on campus. Data from assessments, BMC, and observations are used during these meetings in order to assess if goals are being met and what new goals are needed in order to continue the growth at Akili. The CCS CMO IT works very closely with the VILS coaches to answers questions and come up with real solutions to situations coaches have found themselves in when it comes to the VILS technology and it's accessories.
3. What evidence do you have that supports policies for teacher and student device usage?
At Akili, we believe all students have the right to technology and a curriculum that will prepare them to succeed in any high school and be prepared to attend college. The VILS devices and mobile data are a step toward achieving that goal.
Our Student Technology Handbook is available to students and teachers in both English and Spanish. Students were provided a video that walked them through expectations of technology and the Handbook. The video is always available on student's Digital Citizenship Google Classroom along with other information they might need in regards to their technology.
Several teachers, DCI, staff and the VILS coach attended the Elevating Innovation Virtual Conference. For teachers that could not attend, the VILS coach distributed materials and information thought to be the most important for individual teachers.
Confrence is being held at the end of January. VILS Coach will create a Wakelet for teachers and school leaders with resources that were introduced during the conference.
4. How have you implemented best practices gained from leadership calls, national calls, and IT calls? Can you point to ways in which you've modified your PL and IT practices as a result of reflection and learning from others?
During the Fall Coaching Cycles with teachers, practices gained from VILS calls are always being implemented to best help teachers with their pedagogy in the classrooms.
For example, Mrs. Allen-Dupont, our 6th grade Math Teacher, has the goal of providing students with resources that will help them with topics previously covered that are now being built upon in class to learn new concepts. Through out the cycle, we have worked together to investigate which program, app, or form of dispersing information would work best for her students. We have discussed and tried simulations, recording her teaching, and apps like ClassKick and Kami. This is still a work in progress to find what process will work best for Mrs. Dupont and her students, but these calls allow for me to learn new ways other teachers and coaches might be attempting something similar that I can then bring back to Mrs. Dupont to discuss and/or implement in her own classroom until we find one that fits her and her students' needs.
How do the TLC members impact school improvement or student learning? If not, how can you leverage their expertise?
The Teacher Leader Corps members are a group of teachers that range from beginners to technology to teachers who have an advanced understanding of technology use in the classroom and are comfortable sharing their knowledge with others.
Our beginning teachers are learning from the coach and other teachers on how they use technology in the classroom and then implementing those practices in their own classrooms. Teachers are beginning to try new apps and websites like Securly and Google Forms and adjusting them to meet their own needs and their students' needs.
Self Reflection on the Element: (Choose one: Emerging, Aligning, or Optimizing)
I believe we are aligning in this element.
Strengths: How did your campus exemplify illustrating this element?
Our strength in this element lies solely with all of our teachers that continue to do their best to perfect their craft and integrate technology into the lives of all of our students here at Akili.
Next Steps: What could you have done differently to better align with this element?
I think as the VILS coach, having more in-person meetings with teachers that struggle more but don't reach out for help will increase our use of technology in positive ways. This is on me to engage those teachers more and is more goal for the second half of the year.
