After the War of 1812, the United States and Great Britain began to establish better relations with each other. Trade between the two countries revived. In 1817, the two nations agreed that they would limit the number of warships on the Great Lakes.
In 1818, the US and Great Britain agreed to share the Oregon Country. They drew the border between the United States and Canada at the 49th Parallel, this was known as the Treaty of 1818. In addition, the United States obtained the right to fish off the eastern shores of Canada. This provision benefited the growing fishing industry in New England.
Known as the Convention of 1818, this series of agreements on several issues finally laid the foundation for lasting peace between the United States and Britain.
